We searched about 40 km around town in OpenStreetMap's community data — covering charity shops and second-hand stores — and came up empty. That usually means the shops exist but nobody's mapped them, not that there's nothing to find.

The two kinds of thrift trip

Every thrifter in Cali will eventually learn there are two trips: the browse and the hunt. The browse is aimless, pleasant, and how you find the things you didn't know you wanted. The hunt is targeted — you need a winter coat, a bookshelf, a bread maker — and it rewards knowing which shops price which categories fairly. Both are legitimate. The browse is more fun.

Cali sits near the equator, so there's no real winter wardrobe cycle driving donations. Stock here turns over on life events instead — moves, clean-outs, new arrivals — which means any week can be a good week.

For the hunt, charity shops are usually cheapest on furniture and housewares; independents are better curated on clothing. For the browse, it hardly matters — go where the parking is easy and the volunteers are friendly, and let the shelves decide.

Thrift smarts for Cali

No local shops to visit yet, but the skills transfer anywhere. Four worth knowing before your first trip:

• Donate while you're there. Bring a bag of your own cast-offs. It keeps the cycle going and the volunteers remember friendly faces.
• Check zippers, buttons and seams. Thirty seconds of inspection at the rack beats discovering the broken zipper at home. Thrift stores don't do returns.
• Don't ignore the kids' section. Kids outgrow everything in months, so the children's racks are full of barely-worn quality. Even without kids, the small furniture is great for small spaces.
• Check for completeness. Board games missing pieces, cameras missing caps, tools missing bits — open the box before it goes in your bag.
