A few things worth knowing before you work through Los Angeles's thrift stores:
- Bring a tape measure at Savers. The perfect sideboard is useless if it won't fit through your door. Tape measure in the bag, every trip.
- Go often, buy rarely at Goodwill. The regulars' secret: short frequent visits beat rare long ones. Ten minutes twice a week outperforms a monthly expedition.
- Don't ignore the kids' section. Kids outgrow everything in months, so the children's racks are full of barely-worn quality. Even without kids, the small furniture is great for small spaces.
- Check zippers, buttons and seams. Thirty seconds of inspection at the rack beats discovering the broken zipper at home. Thrift stores don't do returns.
