Los Angeles without the misery: a first-timer's survival guide

Yes, you'll drive everywhere. No, it's not the traffic apocalypse you've heard about if you plan it right. Beaches, tacos, and Griffith at sunset.

Los Angeles breaks first-time visitors in a specific way: they try to see it like a normal city, hopping between far-flung sights, and spend the whole trip in a rental car wondering where LA actually is. The secret is that LA isn't a city, it's a dozen beach towns and neighborhoods loosely affiliated with each other.

Pick a base, commit to it, and stop trying to do Hollywood and Santa Monica and Downtown in one day. Here's how the pieces fit.

Choose your LA

The Westside (Santa Monica, Venice) is the beach vacation: the pier, the boardwalk, Muscle Beach, and sunsets that look edited. Hollywood is the myth: the sign, the Walk of Fame (shorter and weirder than you expect), the Chinese Theatre. Downtown is the surprise: great old theatres, the Arts District, and the best food in the city.

Where you stay decides your trip. Beach people stay west, culture people stay central or east, and everyone should spend at least one evening somewhere they didn't plan. LA rewards the unplanned stop.

Griffith at sunset is non-negotiable

Whatever else you do, get yourself to Griffith Observatory for sunset. The whole basin spreads out below you, the sign sits on the next hill over, and on a clear day you can see the ocean. It's free, it's spectacular, and it's the single best hour you can spend in the city.

Hike up from the Greek Theatre side if you've got the legs; drive if you don't, but go early because the lot fills. After dark, the planetarium shows are worth the ticket.

Eat like you mean it

LA's food scene is its real culture. The taco trucks (a dollar-fifty for something that will ruin all other tacos), the Koreatown late-night spreads, the old-school diners, the farmers markets. This is a city that takes eating out seriously at every price point.
