Prague in three days: the fairytale that lives up to it

The castle, the old town, and the beer halls. How to do Prague in three days without falling into the tourist traps.

Prague is the rare destination that looks exactly like the photos: the spires, the castle on the hill, the Charles Bridge at dawn. It's also one of Europe's best-value cities, with beer cheaper than water and a food scene that rewards the curious.

Three days covers the essentials with room to breathe. The old town is compact; the trick is timing (early mornings, late evenings) and knowing where the locals go.

Day one: the old town

Start at Old Town Square: the Astronomical Clock (the hourly show is brief; the tower view is the real prize), the Tyn Church, the maze of streets around it. Walk to the Charles Bridge, but go early morning or late evening; midday it's a slow-moving crowd.

Afternoon: the Jewish Quarter (the synagogues and the old cemetery are genuinely moving), then dinner in the old town's back streets, away from the square's tourist menus. Czech food is hearty and excellent: svickova, goulash, duck.

Day two: the castle and Mala Strana

Prague Castle is the world's largest ancient castle complex; give it a full morning. St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane (the tiny colorful houses where Kafka lived). The views back over the city from the castle are the best in Prague.

Afternoon: Mala Strana (the Lesser Town) below the castle: baroque churches, quiet gardens, the Lennon Wall. Then the Petrin Hill walk for sunset views. Evening: a beer hall. U Fleku or U Zlateho Tygra; the Czechs invented the beer hall and they take it seriously.

Day three: the other Prague

Cross the river to the new town's edges: Vinohrady for the cafe culture and Riegrovy Sady park (the classic Prague-castle-view picnic spot), Zizkov for the grittier bars and the TV tower with the crawling babies (you'll see).
