City Guide
The Opera House, the coastal walks, and the neighborhoods worth your time. How to do Sydney in three to four days.
Sydney is the rare great city that's also a great beach town, and the trick to a long weekend here is refusing to choose between the two. The harbour is the center of everything: the ferries are public transport and a sightseeing cruise at the same time, and the best views in the city cost the price of a ferry ticket.
Three to four days, harbor by morning, beach by afternoon, and the city's excellent food scene at night. Here's how it breaks down.
Start at Circular Quay: the Opera House (take the tour; the building's story is wilder than you'd guess), the Harbour Bridge (the climb is pricey but unforgettable; the Pylon Lookout is the budget version with nearly the same view). Then take the ferry to Manly: thirty minutes across the harbour, past million-dollar views the whole way, and it costs almost nothing.

Manly's beach and the walk to Shelly Beach fill the afternoon. Back in the city, The Rocks is the historic quarter: old pubs, weekend markets, and the best-preserved corner of colonial Sydney.
The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is the single best free thing in Sydney: six kilometers of cliffs, beaches, and ocean pools, and it takes about two hours at a stroll. Start at Bondi in the morning, swim at Bronte halfway, finish at Coogee for lunch.

Afternoon: Bondi itself deserves a few hours. The Icebergs pool (that famous ocean pool at the edge of the surf) is open to visitors, and the suburb behind the beach has some of the city's best brunch spots. This is Sydney at its most Sydney.
Day three: pick your quarter. Surry Hills for cafes and galleries, Newtown for the alternative strip (bookshops, live music venues, great Thai food), Darlinghurst for the nightlife. Sydney's neighborhoods are compact and each rewards half a day of wandering.

Evening: check what's on. Sydney's gig and festival calendar runs year-round thanks to the weather, and the harbour hosts events you can't see anywhere else. Our Sydney pages track the listings; a night at the Opera House (the building hosts everything from opera to rock) is the bucket-list version.
