Oktoberfest, Diwali, Halloween, and the season when every city's calendar fills up. The fall festivals that justify a trip, and how to catch them.
Fall is festival season. Summer has the weather, but autumn has the calendar: harvest festivals, light festivals, film festivals, and the big cultural seasons all kicking off at once. If you're going to plan one trip around an event this year, make it a fall one.
Here are the heavy hitters, the ones worth building a trip around, plus how to find the smaller gems in whatever city you land in.
The big one. Every fall, Munich's Theresienwiese fills with beer tents, brass bands, and several million visitors, and it remains the world's largest folk festival by a distance. It's equal parts tourist spectacle and genuine Bavarian tradition; the locals in lederhosen aren't costumes, they're regulars.

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, turns cities across India (and Indian communities worldwide) into something magical each autumn: oil lamps, fireworks, sweets, and five days of celebration. Halloween has quietly become a global event. New York's Village parade draws millions, Salem goes full haunted-town for the entire month of October, and cities everywhere now run horror-movie marathons, haunted houses, and costume parties for weeks beforehand.
