Seeing the Canucks in Vancouver: the visitor's game-day guide

Rogers Arena sits right downtown, the SkyTrain drops you at the door, and the building gets loud. Everything a visiting fan needs for a Canucks game day.

Hockey in Vancouver is a religion with really good seafood nearby. Rogers Arena sits at the edge of downtown, right on the SkyTrain line, which means game day here is gloriously simple: train in, game, train out, no parking saga.

Whether you're a Canucks fan making the pilgrimage or a visitor catching whatever's on, here's how to do it right. The building rewards fans who show up early and stay loud.

Getting there and getting in

Take the SkyTrain to Stadium–Chinatown station; the arena is right there. Driving downtown on game night is a choice you will regret, and the train runs late enough for the final horn. If you're staying downtown, honestly, just walk.

Doors open well before puck drop, and the concourse is worth the early arrival: the team store, the food options (better than your average arena), and the pre-game skate warmups. The anthem here is an event in itself; be in your seat for it.

Where to sit

The lower bowl keeps you close to the glass and the hits; the upper bowl gives you the full-ice view that actually lets you follow the play. The end sections behind the nets are where the loudest fans cluster, and the atmosphere builds from there.

For the full experience, sit near the Canucks' attacking end for two periods. Watching an NHL power play develop from behind the net, with 18,000 people standing, is the thing you'll remember.

Before and after the game

The area around the arena has quietly become one of the better pre-game strips in the league: sports bars, breweries, and ramen spots within a few blocks. Yaletown is a ten-minute walk for the nicer dinner option.
