Seeing the Whitecaps in Vancouver: soccer under the BC Place roof

BC Place is one of the great stadium experiences in North American soccer: downtown, under a roof that opens when the weather cooperates, with the Southsiders supporters' section bouncing for ninety minutes straight.

The Whitecaps have been Vancouver's team since the NASL days, and match day here has a proper football feel. Here's how to do it as a visitor, from the SkyTrain to the final whistle.

Getting there

BC Place sits at the edge of downtown, a short walk from Stadium–Chinatown SkyTrain station. Same advice as hockey night: take the train, skip the parking hunt. The stadium's right on the edge of Yaletown, so dinner before the match is easy.

Gates open well before kickoff, and the concourse has the usual stadium fare plus some local touches. The supporters' march to the match is worth catching if you time it right; follow the drums.

Where to sit

The south end is the supporters' section: standing, singing, flags, the full works. If you want the atmosphere, that's where it lives. The sidelines give you the tactical view, and the upper deck is the budget-friendly way in with a great sightline.

Night matches under the lights are the best version of this. The roof keeps the rain off (this is Vancouver, after all), and the building traps the noise beautifully.

Make a weekend of it

Vancouver does the sports weekend well: soccer Saturday, seawall Sunday. The stadium district has the pre-game bars, and the whole downtown core is walkable from BC Place.
