The first-timer's playbook

Until Batemans Bay has mapped spots, here's how to do any game café right. Ask the staff to teach you — that's their job. Ask about the cover charge before you sit. Order food and drink; that's the business model. Start with a gateway game, keep phones away, and respect the components like the library they are.

Batemans Bay sits about 36° south of the equator, so the seasons run flipped. Winter here runs June to August, and it's peak game-night season — long evenings made for settling in with a big box.

Weeknights beat weekends for table availability and teaching time. That's the insider move everywhere.

Game night smarts for Batemans Bay

No mapped game spots yet, but the game-night skills work anywhere. Four worth knowing:

• Thank the teacher. A good games teacher makes the night. Tell them, tip them, come back.
• Check the events calendar. Tournaments, learn-to-plays, designer nights — the calendar is where the community lives.
• Play the café's copy, buy your own later. Try before you buy is the whole model. Love a game? The shop side (or the café's retail shelf) has it.
• Ask about the regulars' nights. Many cafés run weekly open game nights. Show up solo and you'll leave with a gaming group.
