Bookstore tips for Berwick-upon-Tweed

The regulars' playbook for Berwick-upon-Tweed's bookshops:

• Check the sale shelf rhythm at The Works. Shops clear shelves on cycles. Ask when the next cull happens — that's when the bargains land.
• Buy the signed copy at Berrydin Books. Signed stock costs the same as unsigned and only goes up in charm. Ask at the till; shops often have signed copies behind the counter.
• Don't judge by the window display. The front table is marketing. The back shelves are the shop's real taste. Walk the whole floor.
• Check condition before you pay. Used books: check for missing pages, water damage, and cracked spines. A quick flip-through takes ten seconds.
