The new reader's playbook

Until Atchison has mapped comic shops, here's how to start anywhere. Walk in on a Wednesday and say you've never read comics — staff hear it happily every week. Start a pull list so you never miss an issue. Try the indie shelf alongside the big titles. And bag and board anything you want to keep; it costs pennies.

Atchison sits about 40° north of the equator, so it gets proper seasons. Winter is peak comics season: dark evenings, the big event storylines running, and the Wednesday ritual at its cosiest.

The back-issue long boxes are the real treasure: full runs of older series at a fraction of collected-edition prices.

Comic smarts for Atchison

No mapped comic shops yet, but the comics habits work anywhere. Four worth knowing:

• Ask about game nights. Many comic shops run Magic, Pokémon, or board game nights. It's the community centre side of the shop.
• Pre-order the big events. Major storylines sell out. Pre-ordering through your shop guarantees your copy and helps them order right.
• Try digital for sampling. Digital issues are cheap for trying series. When you love one, buy the physical from your shop.
• Don't be embarrassed to start. Everyone starts somewhere. 'I've never read comics, where do I begin?' is a question staff hear happily every week.

What earns a listing in Atchison

Our bar is a walk-in shop built around comics. New issues, back issues, trades — if comics are the business, it qualifies.

When a qualifying comic shop gets mapped in Atchison, this page updates on the next refresh with its name, address where available, and whatever hours, phone or website the mappers recorded. Nothing here is paid placement and nothing is sponsored — if it's on the map, it's on the page.

This page refreshes daily from the latest map data, so the moment a qualifying comic shop appears in Atchison's OpenStreetMap data, it shows up here — usually within a day of being mapped.

Put Atchison on the map

Know a comic shop here that isn't listed? The fastest route onto this page runs through OpenStreetMap: add it as shop=comics with its name and address, and it'll appear here after our next daily refresh. Local knowledge beats every dataset.
