The new reader's playbook

Until Consett has mapped comic shops, here's how to start anywhere. Walk in on a Wednesday and say you've never read comics — staff hear it happily every week. Start a pull list so you never miss an issue. Try the indie shelf alongside the big titles. And bag and board anything you want to keep; it costs pennies.

Consett sits about 55° north of the equator, so it gets proper seasons. Winter is peak comics season: dark evenings, the big event storylines running, and the Wednesday ritual at its cosiest.

The back-issue long boxes are the real treasure: full runs of older series at a fraction of collected-edition prices.

Comic smarts for Consett

No mapped comic shops yet, but the comics habits work anywhere. Four worth knowing:

• Learn the publishers. Beyond the big two there's a whole ecosystem. A quick education in publishers opens up the whole shop.
• Ask about local creators. Many shops stock local indie creators and host signings. It's the most direct way to support comics in your town.
• Start a pull list. The shop sets aside your series each week. You never miss an issue, and the shop gets a reliable customer. Everyone wins.
• Check the toys and statues. The collectibles wall funds the comics side. Fun to browse, dangerous for the wallet.
