The new reader's playbook

Until Hood River has mapped comic shops, here's how to start anywhere. Walk in on a Wednesday and say you've never read comics — staff hear it happily every week. Start a pull list so you never miss an issue. Try the indie shelf alongside the big titles. And bag and board anything you want to keep; it costs pennies.

Hood River sits about 46° north of the equator, so it gets proper seasons. Winter is peak comics season: dark evenings, the big event storylines running, and the Wednesday ritual at its cosiest.

The back-issue long boxes are the real treasure: full runs of older series at a fraction of collected-edition prices.

Comic smarts for Hood River

No mapped comic shops yet, but the comics habits work anywhere. Four worth knowing:

• Check the trade paperbacks. Collected editions are the economical way to read full runs. The trades wall is the best value in the shop.
• Check the toys and statues. The collectibles wall funds the comics side. Fun to browse, dangerous for the wallet.
• Start a pull list. The shop sets aside your series each week. You never miss an issue, and the shop gets a reliable customer. Everyone wins.
• Pre-order the big events. Major storylines sell out. Pre-ordering through your shop guarantees your copy and helps them order right.

Put Hood River on the map

Know a comic shop here that isn't listed?
