Day trips from Dakar

Dakar's surroundings are the trip: the island of Gorée, the Pink Lake, the Petite Côte beaches, the bird paradise of Djoudj. All real, all reachable.

Photos for Dakar are still on their way. Every listing below is real.

The island and the lake

Gorée Island

20 min ferry

The essential day: House of Slaves, the pastel streets, lunch by the water. Ferries run regularly from the Plateau terminal.

Lac Rose

~45 min

The Pink Lake: salt harvesters, quad-bike tours, the famous rally finish. Pinkest in the dry season (Nov-Jun).

The coast

Saly & Bandia Reserve

~1.5 hrs

The Petite Côte beach strip plus the Bandia wildlife reserve: rhinos, giraffes, crocs on a half-day safari.

Saint-Louis & Djoudj

~4 hrs / overnight

The colonial island city (jazz festival in May) and the Djoudj bird sanctuary (one of the world's great birding sites, Nov-Apr). Worth the overnight.
