Day trips from Mumbai

Mumbai's surroundings are the weekend: the ghats' hill stations, the Konkan beaches, the wine country, the Elephanta caves. All real, all reachable.

Photos for Mumbai are still on their way. Every listing below is real.

The ghats

Lonavala & Khandala

~80 km / 2 hrs

The hill-station classic: monsoon waterfalls, Tiger Point, chikki from the original shops. The expressway makes it easy; the old highway is prettier.

Matheran

The car-free hill station: the toy train from Neral, red mud paths, monkeys, the valley viewpoints. No vehicles - walk or horseback.

The coast

Alibaug

~100 km / 1 hr + RoRo ferry

The Konkan weekend: Kolaba Fort (walkable at low tide), the beaches, the ferry from Bhaucha Dhakka skips the road.

Elephanta Island

Ferry from Gateway · half-day

The UNESCO caves: the great Shiva Trimurti. First ferry out, back by lunch.
