Day trips
Day trips from Phillaur
Phillaur’s superpower is position: a railway junction on the Delhi–Amritsar line and a GT Road town, with four real cities in day-trip range. This is the practical list — real distances, real trains, what to actually do when you get there. Distances and fares researched October 2026.
Amritsar: the Golden Temple (~126 km road, ~110 km rail)
Getting there
Trains run direct from Phillaur Junction to Amritsar Junction (e.g. Tata-Jammu Tawi 18101, 05:32→08:00) with fares from Rs 145. By road: hatchback cab around Rs 2,166 plus tolls (one aggregator’s listed fare, Oct 2026). Leave early; the temple at dawn is the whole point.
What to do
Sri Harmandir Sahib at sunrise, the langar hall (free, open to all), Jallianwala Bagh memorial next door, and the Wagah border ceremony in the late afternoon if your legs hold. One full day, back by night train.
Ludhiana: the big city next door (20 km)
Punjab’s largest city is twenty minutes up the road — this is where Phillaur goes for everything it doesn’t have. Ghumar Mandi for shopping, the city’s famous food streets, and the Lodhi Fort ruins for a slice of history. Cinemas, malls, hospitals: whatever the errand, Ludhiana is the answer. Trains and buses run constantly; an auto or cab covers it in 30–40 minutes.
Jalandhar: the district city (45 km)
The district headquarters, 45 km north: Devi Talab Mandir, the old bazaars, and Rangla Punjab — the Punjabi-culture theme village on the highway — for an evening of folk performance and food. Trains from Phillaur Junction reach Jalandhar in under an hour; buses on the GT Road run all day.
Chandigarh: the planned city (~132 km)
About 2h20m by road: Le Corbusier’s grid city, the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, and Sector 17’s plaza. A long day trip or an easy overnight — combine with the airport (IXC) if you’re flying out. Cabs list the Phillaur–Chandigarh run at ~132 km.
Anandpur Sahib: the Hola Mohalla pilgrimage
The birthplace of the Khalsa and the home of Hola Mohalla — the Sikh festival of martial tradition held the day after Holi (14 March 2027 per the Nanakshahi calendar). Gatka displays, nagar kirtan, and the takht at Kesgarh Sahib. Go for the festival if you can; otherwise it is a half-day pilgrimage. Check the route and timings on the day — festival crowds change everything.
The honest frame
You do not need to sleep in Phillaur to do any of this — but the town’s junction station and highway position make it a genuinely cheap base: trains to Amritsar from Rs 145, Ludhiana 20 km away, Jalandhar 45. Plan Amritsar as the one big day; keep Ludhiana and Jalandhar as half-days; save Anandpur Sahib for Hola Mohalla.
