Guides › Farmers markets

There's no faster way to like Ella more than a Saturday morning at the farmers market. Coffee in one hand, a tote bag filling up in the other — it's the cheapest good time in town, and you come home with dinner.
There is no off-season here: markets run year-round and the stalls turn over with the harvest calendar. Mango, mangosteen, rambutan and durian each have their weeks, and the leafy greens are best and cheapest in the rainy months, roughly October to April.
Go hungry. Nearly every market worth its salt has food trucks or ready-to-eat stalls, and lunch at the market beats lunch anywhere else.
Expect the produce you'd hope for, plus the stuff that makes a market trip feel like an event: local honey, farm eggs, fresh flowers, sourdough, preserves, and at least one food truck you'll end up queuing at.
Buy what's in season and you'll eat better for less — in the tropics that means following the fruit calendar. Ask the vendors what's peaking this week; they always know before anyone else.
Markets run year-round here, and mornings are the classic slot — early means the full pick of the day's harvest. The rainy months (roughly October to April) can make afternoons a washout, so morning runs are the local's move.
Market days and hours change with the season — the Dayfari app keeps track of what's actually on around Ella this weekend, plus other local events worth the trip.
