Farmers markets in Swansea

If you live in Swansea and you haven't folded a farmers market into your week, you're leaving one of the best parts of the city on the table. Here's what to expect, when to go, and how to spot the good ones.

Peak season runs May through October. June strawberries and August corn are worth planning your Saturday around; winter markets still show up with squash, apples, root veg, honey and preserves.

Most the UK markets run Saturday mornings, with a growing number adding a midweek evening shift for the after-work crowd.

What's actually sold

Just-picked produce is the headline act, but the supporting cast is what keeps people coming back: local honey, farm eggs, cut flowers, sourdough and baked goods, small-batch preserves, and usually a cheese or charcuterie stall doing brisk business.

Buy what's in season and you'll eat better for less — strawberries in June are a different fruit than the clamshell ones in February.

When markets run

Plan on Saturday mornings, roughly 8am to 1pm, though it varies by market. Midweek evening markets are catching on for people who can't do weekends — smaller crowds, same good stuff.

How to pick a good market

• Follow the locals. If the line at the berry stand is mostly people with tote bags and strong opinions, you're in the right place. Tourist-trap markets sell fudge; good ones sell dinner.
• Talk to the grower. The best stalls are run by the people who grew what's on the table. Ask what's good this week — they'll tell you, usually at length.
• Sample before you buy. Any good market expects it. Taste the peaches, then buy the peaches.
• Check the ratio. A great market is mostly farmers. If it's mostly crafts and candles with a sad lettuce table in the corner, keep driving.
• Arrive early for selection, late for deals. The prized stuff sells out by 10am; vendors start cutting prices in the last half hour rather than hauling it home.

• Go hungry — the prepared-food stalls are half the point.
• Bring your own bags and a cooler if you're driving.
• Cash helps at the odd stall that's still card-shy.
• Walk the whole market once before buying anything. Then go back.
