How to pick a good market
Follow the locals. If the line at the berry stand is mostly people with tote bags and strong opinions, you're in the right place. Tourist-trap markets sell fudge; good ones sell dinner.
Talk to the grower. The best stalls are run by the people who grew what's on the table. Ask what's good this week — they'll tell you, usually at length.
Sample before you buy. Any good market expects it. Taste the peaches, then buy the peaches.
Check the ratio. A great market is mostly farmers. If it's mostly crafts and candles with a sad lettuce table in the corner, keep driving.
Arrive early for selection, late for deals. The prized stuff sells out by 10am; vendors start cutting prices in the last half hour rather than hauling it home.
