Newcastle walks the way it swims: along the coast first. The Bathers Way is the six-kilometre signature stroll, Glenrock's tracks handle the bushwalking, the Fernleigh Track takes the long flat ride, and the Memorial Walk does the views in 160 metres. Six verified trails below (October 2026).

The coastal walk

The one everyone does:

Bathers Way

6 km paved coastal walk, Merewether Baths to Nobbys Beach - premier NSW coastal walk

The city's signature walk: six kilometres of paved coastline from Merewether Baths to Nobbys Beach, past the ocean baths, the beaches and the headlands. The premier coastal walk in NSW, and free.

The Glenrock bush tracks

Bushwalking, three grades of it:

Yuelarbah walking track

Glenrock State Conservation Area - 6.8 km return, Grade 3, lookout + waterfalls

The bushwalk with a payoff: 6.8 kilometres return through Glenrock's rainforest gullies to a lookout and waterfalls. Grade 3 - bring water and proper shoes.

Leggy Point loop

Glenrock - 2 km loop, Grade 2, family walk with coast views

The easy Glenrock loop: two kilometres, Grade 2, family-friendly, with coast views for minimal effort.

Bombala walking track

Glenrock - 1 km return, descends to Dudley Beach

The short sharp one: one kilometre return descending through the bush to Dudley Beach. Walk down, swim, walk back up.

The rail trail and the lookout

Flat and high:

Fernleigh Track

15.5 km rail trail, Adamstown to Belmont - old Belmont railway (closed 1991), shared path

The long flat one: 15.5 kilometres of rail trail from Adamstown to Belmont along the old Belmont railway line (closed 1991). Walkers, runners and cyclists share the path.

Newcastle Memorial Walk

160 m elevated bridge, Strzelecki Lookout - 360-degree views

The short spectacular one: a 160-metre elevated bridge at Strzelecki Lookout with 360-degree views over the city, the coast and the Hunter. Sunset is the move.

Good to know

Bathers Way is fully paved - prams, wheelchairs and runners all fine. Yuelarbah is the only Grade 3 on the list; the rest are easy. Glenrock is a State Conservation Area, so take your rubbish with you. The Memorial Walk's 160 metres deliver the best views-per-step ratio in the city. The facts above come from public listings (October 2026).
