Record stores in Consett

We haven't mapped any record stores in Consett, County Durham yet. We searched about 25 km around town in OpenStreetMap's community data — record stores — and came up empty. That usually means the places exist but nobody's mapped them, not that there's nothing to find. This page refreshes daily from the latest map data, so a blank today can be a full guide tomorrow.

The digger's playbook

Until Consett has mapped record shops, here's how to work any bins. Hit new arrivals first. Learn the grading — visual versus play-grade matters. Check the vinyl in good light, not just the sleeve. Ask to play anything questionable. Bring a want-list, bring cash for the small shops, and flip through the whole dollar bin — the joy-per-dollar ratio is unbeatable.

Consett sits about 55° north of the equator, so it gets proper seasons. Winter is peak digging season: dark evenings, the new-arrivals bin fresh from the autumn collection sell-offs, and nowhere better to spend a Saturday.

And genre-hop. The best finds live in the sections you don't know — jazz collectors find gold in classical bins and vice versa.

Digging smarts for Consett

No mapped record shops yet, but the digging skills work anywhere. Four worth knowing:

• Check the vinyl, not just the sleeve. Slide it out (carefully, by the edges) and look at it in good light. Sleeves lie; vinyl doesn't.
• Ask to play it. Good shops have turntables for exactly this. If they won't let you listen, that's information too.
• Handle records properly in the shop. By the edges, never the grooves. Shops notice, and so do the records.
• Inspect the seams. Split seams and ring wear tell you how a record lived. Light wear is fine; trashed sleeves drag the value.

What we're watching for in Consett

A real record shop: new vinyl, used vinyl, or both, with bins to dig. Independents and specialists all count. The vinyl wall at the lifestyle chain doesn't.
