Things to do in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi doesn't do anything by halves: the biggest mosque, the fastest theme parks, the grandest palace. But the free stuff - the Corniche at sunset, the mangroves at dawn - is just as good. This is the real capital, beyond the layover.

Photos for Abu Dhabi are still on their way. Every listing below is real.

The Grand Mosque - go at sunset

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Free · dress code enforced

The essential Abu Dhabi experience: 82 white domes, the world's largest hand-knotted carpet, chandeliers the size of cars. Free entry, and the sunset light on the marble is unreal. Abayas are loaned at the entrance; Friday mornings are closed to tourists. Go late afternoon and stay for the evening call to prayer.

Saadiyat's culture mile

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat Island · around AED 63

Jean Nouvel's rain-of-light dome over a genuinely world-class collection - Leonardo to Mondrian to Islamic art. The building alone is worth the trip; the galleries take 2-3 hours. Book online to skip the queue.

teamLab Phenomena

Saadiyat Cultural District · opened Apr 2025

The immersive digital-art museum that opened in April 2025 - 17,000 sqm of responsive light, water and sound installations. The new anchor of the cultural district; the Guggenheim and Natural History Museum are still to come - check status before you promise them.

Yas Island - the thrill day

Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld

Yas Island · day passes from ~AED 300+

Four theme parks on one island: Formula Rossa (the world's fastest coaster), the Warner Bros indoor park, the waterpark, and the marine-life park. The F1 ticket packages bundle park access - check before buying separately. Go on a weekday; weekends are packed.

The palace and the Corniche

Qasr Al Watan

Al Ras Al Akhdar · around AED 65

The presidential palace opened to the public: the Great Hall's dome, the Spirit of Collaboration room, the evening light show (Palace in Motion). The most opulent building you can walk into in the Gulf.

The Corniche

8 km · Free

Abu Dhabi's front porch: Blue Flag beach, a dedicated cycle track, and the skyline view that defines the city. Sunset is the hour - the whole city comes out.

On the water

Eastern Mangrove kayaking

Tours from ~AED 60

Paddle the mangrove channels at dawn: herons, crabs, the city skyline behind the trees. The promenade boardwalk is free if you'd rather walk it.
