Things to do in Bangkok

Bangkok rewards the curious: temple mornings, market afternoons, rooftop evenings. The tourist trail is real but the city is bigger than it - this is the Bangkok that keeps people coming back.

Photos for Bangkok are still on their way. Every listing below is real.

The temple morning

Grand Palace & Wat Pho

Rattanakosin · 500 THB palace / 200 THB Wat Pho

The essential Bangkok morning: the Grand Palace's Emerald Buddha, then Wat Pho's Reclining Buddha next door (get the traditional massage at the temple school - it's the original). Go at 8:30am opening; the tour buses arrive at 10.

Wat Arun

Thonburi side · 100 THB

The Temple of Dawn across the river: climb the porcelain-mosaic prang for the river view. Sunset from the opposite bank is the postcard.

Markets that matter

Chatuchak Weekend Market

Sat-Sun · Free entry

15,000 stalls: the world's biggest weekend market. Go early (9am), buy the coconut ice cream, get lost in Section 7 (vintage). The weekday plant/flower sections are the insider move.

Yaowarat (Chinatown)

Evenings · Free to walk

Bangkok's neon food canyon: bird's-nest soup, grilled seafood, the midnight crowds. Walk it hungry after dark.

Green Bangkok

Lumpini Park

Free

The city's green lung: monitor lizards on the paths, tai chi at dawn, paddle boats on the lake. The evening jogging crowd is a scene in itself.

Bang Krachao

Free (+~100 THB bike hire)

The 'green lung' island in the Chao Phraya bend: elevated cycle paths through jungle, the floating market on weekends. Take the ferry from Klong Toei pier.

On the river

Chao Phraya express boat

~15-50 THB

The orange-flag express boat is Bangkok's best cheap thrill: temples, the palace and the skyline for the price of a coffee. The tourist boat (220 THB day pass) adds commentary.
