Things to do
Things to do in Barnala
Barnala doesn’t do tourist checklists — it does one proper fort, one storied gurudwara, a working bazaar that comes alive at dusk, and the best seat in Malwa for watching how Punjab actually lives. This is the curated short list: everything below is verified, most of it is free, and none of it needs a ticket booked a month ahead.
The short list
Five things, in priority order. Do these and you’ve done Barnala properly:
Bhadaur fort
Built in 1693 by Baba Ram Singh of the Phulkian Misl in small lakhori bricks, with high ceilings and thick walls that breathe with the seasons. It is privately owned, so there is no ticketed tour — admire the walls from the approach. Film crews from the Hindi and Punjabi industries have shot here, drawn by exactly that weathered character.
Gurudwara Arisar Sahib, Sekha
Marks Guru Tegh Bahadur’s Malwa tour; the village is one of the old 22-village ‘Bahia’ cluster tied to his journey. A three-day annual fair every January commemorates the Guru’s visit, the gurudwara draws large amavasya (new-moon) gatherings monthly, and it preserves a hukamnama dated December 1704 attributed to Guru Gobind Singh. Cover your head, accept langar if served.
Sadar Bazaar at dusk
Barnala’s working commercial spine: cloth, electronics, sweet shops pulling fresh jalebi, the full Punjabi market-town sensory load. Agarsain Chowk on Sadar Bazar Road is the town’s landmark square — start there and wander.
GE Cinemas
The town’s main multiplex — laser projection, recliner seats, gaming zone, food court and parking, running Punjabi and Hindi commercial releases daily from 9 am. See below for what’s on.
Dussehra ground cricket
Barnala’s local league scene plays here — the CricHeroes ‘Nav-barnala’ profile records Kings 11 Barnala vs RCB Barnala trading wins in the Halla Gulla Cup (May–June 2025). Turn up on a match evening; nobody will mind you watching.
Free things to do in Barnala
Most of the best of Barnala costs nothing. The gurdwaras are free to enter and serve free langar: Arisar Sahib at Sekha (~7 km), Gurudwara Singh Sabha in Sadar Bazar, the Ramgarhia Gurudwara and Gurudwara Nanaksar Thath. Time a visit for an amavasya (new moon) and Sekha draws a large gathering.
The Sadar Bazaar walk is free and best at dusk. Local cricket at the Dussehra ground is free to watch. The Improvement Trust’s new roadside plantation and mini forest (about 350 plants going in, per October 2026 reports) will be a free green space as it grows. And the Bhadaur fort exterior costs nothing to admire from the approach road.
Catch a film at GE Cinemas
GE Cinemas (GE Multiplex), Bathinda Road near T-Point, is Barnala’s main screen: laser projection, recliner seats, a gaming zone, food court and parking, open 9 am–11 pm daily with Punjabi and Hindi commercial releases. Justdial lists it at 3.8 from 687 ratings.
Also in town: VRC Cinema at VRC Mall (Nihal Singh Wala Road, BajjaKhana Chowk), New Palace Theater on Dhanaula Road, and the 9d Cinema at Ocean Mall. Showtimes change daily, so check what’s actually playing before you go: GE Cinemas showtimes on BookMyShow and movie tickets on District by Zomato carry the live listings.
Cricket is the local sport
Barnala plays cricket the Punjabi way: on every open ground, in leagues with names like Kings 11 Barnala and RCB Barnala, and increasingly on YouTube. MCCA Barnala (Millennium Cricket Academy) runs the cricket ground behind the court complex near Nanaksar (Justdial 5.0, 61 ratings); LS Cricket Academy is on Sanghera Old Exchange Road; the S.D. College Ground on Pakka College Road is the town’s best-known open ground. MCCA’s own site is at mcca-barnala.business.site.
The village cosco-ball circuit — Kahneke, Dhaner and beyond — lives on livestreams: Barnala Sports Live on YouTube broadcasts tournaments with drone cameras and multi-camera replays. No published fixture calendar exists, so the honest way to catch a match is to ask around the grounds or follow the streams.
Festivals through the year
Barnala runs on Punjab’s festival calendar, and the town-wide observances are the best free shows in town. Verified upcoming dates: Guru Gobind Singh Gurpurab — 28 Dec 2026 and 15 Jan 2027; Lohri — 13 Jan 2027; Maghi — 14 Jan 2027; Hola Mohalla — 23 Mar 2027; Vaisakhi — 14 Apr 2027; Diwali / Bandi Chhor Divas — 29 Oct 2027; Guru Nanak Gurpurab — 14 Nov 2027. Already confirmed for 2026: Bandi Chhor Divas 8 Nov, Guru Nanak Gurpurab 24 Nov, and the Shobha Yatra passing through town on 1 Dec. The events page carries the full verified list.
