Things to do in Mumbai

Mumbai is Maximum City: the financial capital, Bollywood's home, the sea-face promenades, the street food, the festivals. Overwhelming at first, addictive within a day.

Photos for Mumbai are still on their way. Every listing below is real.

The icons

Gateway of India & Elephanta

The arch is free; the Elephanta ferry (1 hr each way) takes you to the UNESCO cave temples - the rock-cut Shiva is extraordinary. Go on the first ferry (9am).

Marine Drive

Free

The Queen's Necklace: walk the sea-face at sunset, watch the monsoon waves crash over the tetrapods (from behind the railing). The city's living room.

Neighbourhoods

Colaba Causeway

Free to walk

The tourist mile: street stalls, the great old cafes (Leopold, Mondegar), the Sassoon Dock fish market at dawn nearby.

Bandra

Free to walk

The queen of the suburbs: Bandstand's sea-face, the Bollywood bungalows, Linking Road shopping, the Mount Mary steps.

Dharavi (reality tour)

Tours from ~1,500 INR

The great informal economy: book a reputable walking tour (the community-run ones) - leather, pottery, recycling, 15,000 single-room factories. Eye-opening, respectfully done.

Green and sacred

Sanjay Gandhi National Park & Kanheri Caves

~100-200 INR entry

The national park inside the city: the 2,000-year-old Kanheri Buddhist caves, lions/tigers in the safari, the forest. A half-day escape.
