Things to do in Seoul

The capital that never sleeps: Joseon palaces between skyscrapers, the Hongdae buskers, Myeongdong's street food — and the fastest internet you'll ever use.

Photos for Seoul are still on their way. Every listing below is real.

Top things to do in Seoul

The 24-hour city: palaces, K-pop, and the Han river.

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace — The 1395 grand palace: the changing of the guard, the National Folk Museum — hanbok rental for the photos.
  • Bukchon Hanok Village — The traditional rooflines between the palaces: the lanes, the viewpoints — go early, it's residential.
  • Myeongdong — The shopping and street-food canyon: the cosmetics, the night stalls.
  • Hongdae — The university district: the buskers, the indie clubs, the nightlife.
  • N Seoul Tower (Namsan) — The tower on the mountain: the cable car, the city panorama.
  • Dongdaemun Design Plaza — Zaha Hadid's aluminium curves: the night markets, the exhibitions.
  • Gangnam (COEX/Starfield) — The mall city: the Starfield Library, the aquarium, the temple across the road (Bongeunsa).

Free things to do in Seoul

Seoul is generous if your budget isn't. All of these cost nothing or close to it:

  • Bukchon lanes — The hanok lanes: free (be quiet, people live here).
  • Cheonggyecheon — The restored stream: the 11 km walk — free.
  • Namsan (hiking) — The mountain trails: free (tower is paid).
  • Hongdae busking — The street performances: free.
  • Seoul Forest — The park: free.
  • Gyeongbokgung (gate area) — The square and the guard ceremony viewing: free.

Festivals & the religious calendar

The town's own festivals:

  • Hi Seoul Festival (May & October) — The street-arts festival: parades, the city stages.
  • Seoul Lantern Festival (November) — The Cheonggyecheon lanterns: the winter lights.
  • Cherry blossom (Yeouido) (early April) — The Yeouido park blossoms: the hanami crowds.
  • Seollal/Chuseok (city quiet) (lunar) — The holidays empty the city — the palaces' special programmes.

And the national calendar:

  • Seollal (Lunar New Year) (January/February (lunar)) — Korea's biggest family holiday: ancestral rites, tteokguk, sebae bows. Much of the country travels; cities go quiet.
  • Chuseok (September/October (lunar)) — Harvest moon festival: songpyeon rice cakes, family gatherings, folk games. The other great travel week of the year.
  • Buddha's Birthday (April/May (lunar)) — Lantern festivals at temples nationwide — lotus lanterns strung across temple courtyards and streets.

Exact dates are confirmed yearly — check local listings before booking around a festival.

Sports: Baseball

Seoul has THREE KBO teams: the LG Twins and Doosan Bears share Jamsil; the Kiwoom Heroes play at Gocheok Dome. The Jamsil derby is the fixture. Football: FC Seoul at the World Cup Stadium. Esports: the LoL Park at Jonggak — Seoul is the world capital of competitive gaming.

The Han river's cycling is the daily sport; the hiking (Bukhansan, Namsan) is the weekend religion.
