Kerry Airport (KIR)

Farranfore's little airport — 50km from Kenmare, five flights a day, ten-minute security. Everything you need, nothing you don't.

Photos for Kerry Airport (KIR) are still on their way. Every listing below is real.

Kerry Airport at a glance

Kerry Airport (KIR) sits at Farranfore, about 50km and a 41-minute drive from Kenmare — the nearest airport by a long way (Cork is 90km+, Shannon further still). It's a small, friendly regional airport: one terminal, around five flights a day, and security that takes five to ten minutes on a bad day. Scheduled carriers include Ryanair, Aer Lingus and British Airways. Don't expect a shopping mall; do expect the calmest airport experience in Ireland.

Terminal: small, fast, honest

One terminal building does everything. A new arrivals hall opened in 2025 and the departures hall has been expanded with a new bar and restaurant — the airport is visibly investing as passenger numbers climb. Check-in is quick, the new security scanners mean fewer liquid-bag rituals, and boarding is usually a short walk across the apron. The honest caveat from regulars: things open around flight times, so there's little point arriving three hours early.

Lounges: there aren't any

Let's be straight: Kerry Airport has no private or airline lounges. What it has instead is a calm terminal with plenty of seats and genuinely friendly staff — most travellers say they'd rather wait here than in a crowded lounge elsewhere. If lounge access matters to your trip, that's an argument for flying via Cork or Dublin instead.

Travel credit cards: we're lining up card options that include lounge access for when you connect through bigger airports — no links until the programme is signed, so nothing here is a dead end.

Food and drink

The airport bar and restaurant (airside) does the job well — reviews consistently praise it for an airport. Expect to pay around €12–13 for something like a baguette and a soft drink. Hours follow the flight schedule rather than the clock, so eat when you can, not when you're hungry.

Getting to and from Kenmare

Bus

~2 hours via Killarney · from ~$15 (estimate)

There's no direct airport–Kenmare bus. The route is Farranfore/Kerry Airport → Killarney bus station → Kenmare (Bus Éireann). Allow about two hours door to door and check the connection at Killarney — the Kenmare leg runs daily in summer, Monday to Friday off-season.

Taxi / private transfer

41 minutes · ~$95–$120 (estimate)

The straightforward option, especially for late arrivals when the buses have stopped. Prices move with demand — agree the fare before you get in.

Driving

41 minutes · ~30 miles

Straightforward roads via Farranfore and Kilgarvan. Long-term parking at the airport is convenient and reasonably priced if you're leaving a car for the trip.

Layover itineraries

3 hours — stay airside. Honestly: this is a five-flights-a-day airport. Grab food at the bar, enjoy the calm, don't try to go anywhere.

6 hours — dash to Killarney. A taxi gets you to Killarney town in about 20 minutes. Walk the main street, see St Mary's Cathedral, be back with time to spare. Don't attempt Kenmare itself on six hours — the mountain road each way eats the margin.

Overnight — sleep near the airport or in Killarney. There's no hotel at the terminal; the nearest options cluster around Farranfore and Killarney (20 min). An overnight in Killarney plus the morning bus to Kenmare is the civilised routing.

When to use Cork instead

Cork Airport (ORK), 90–130km away, is the wider-services alternative: more routes, more carriers, actual lounges, and a daily direct summer bus to Kenmare via the N71 (Bantry, Skibbereen, Clonakilty, Bandon). If the fare difference is small, or you need lounge access or a late-evening arrival, Cork wins. If you want the shortest hop to Kenmare, Kerry wins every time.
