Halloween 2026: how to actually find the good stuff

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, which means the whole weekend is fair game. Costume parties, haunted houses, family events: here's how to find yours.

Here's the thing about Halloween: everyone knows it's October 31st, but nobody knows what's actually happening in their city until the week before, when the good stuff is already sold out. This year Halloween lands on a Saturday, so the entire weekend is in play.

The move is to start looking now, not on October 30th. The haunted houses with real production values sell timed tickets. The good costume parties hit capacity. The pumpkin patches get picked over. A little planning goes a long way.

For the thrill-seekers

Haunted houses and scare attractions are the main event for a lot of people, and the quality range is enormous. The big theme-park haunts are productions on the level of Broadway shows; the local charity haunts in actual old buildings can be scarier for a tenth of the price.

Book timed tickets in advance for the popular ones, they genuinely sell out on the Saturday. And check the scare level before you drag a reluctant friend along. Some of these are not kidding around.

For families

The family version of Halloween is arguably better: pumpkin patches, corn mazes, daytime trick-or-treat trails at zoos and museums, and the neighborhood streets that go all-out with decorations. These events are built for kids and they sell out too, just quieter.

Look for the daytime events at local farms and community centers. They're cheaper, calmer, and the cider donuts alone are worth the trip. Costume parades for little kids are pure joy.

For the party crowd

Saturday Halloween means the costume parties are spread across the whole weekend, which is great for your social life and terrible for your decision-making. Bars, clubs, and warehouses all run their own versions; the themed ones (decades, horror movies, puns) are usually the best.

Tickets for the big parties go early and get expensive late. Pick one, commit, and put actual effort into the costume. The people who win Halloween are the ones who committed to the bit.
