Farmers' markets

Farmers' markets in Phillaur

No chalkboard-sign organic market - instead, working grain mandis, harvest seasons you can set your watch by, and mustard fields that turn the Doaba yellow in winter. The honest food-trade guide.

An honest note on farmers' markets

Phillaur doesn't have a curated weekend farmers' market - no organic stalls, no chalkboard signs. What it has is the real thing underneath: this is the Doaba wheat-and-paddy belt, and the town sits in the middle of some of Punjab's most productive farmland. The food trade here is wholesale and working, not curated - and for understanding where Punjabi food comes from, that's arguably better.

Where the food actually trades

The mandi economy

Phillaur & surrounding villages

Phillaur's grain trade runs through the mandi system of the Doaba belt - during wheat harvest (April-May) and paddy season (October-November) the yards fill with trolleys, auctioneers and mountains of grain. Ask locally for the current season's active yard; mornings are when it's alive.

Sabzi vendors & the bazaars

Naya Bazar, Puraana Bazar

The daily vegetable trade happens on carts and in the bazaar lanes - seasonal Doaba produce: sarson, methi and palak in winter; okra, gourds and mangoes in summer. Prices are local, not tourist.

Farm gates on the village roads

Nakodar Rd, Bara Pind Rd

The roads out of Phillaur run past working farms. In harvest season, farm gates sell kinnow, guava and seasonal vegetables directly - Punjabi farmers are generous with directions and samples.

Seasonal calendar

April-May: wheat harvest - the mandis at full roar, fresh atta in every kitchen. June: mangoes arrive from the orchards. Oct-Nov: paddy harvest, then sarson (mustard) sowing - the fields turn yellow by December-January, which is the prettiest the Doaba gets. Jan: Lohri - rewari, peanuts and jaggery everywhere; the winter-produce peak is sarson da saag season.
