Beauty & Wellness in Fez
Fez doesn't do wellness the way a resort town does. Here, unwinding means a hammam — the steam-and-scrub ritual Moroccans have practiced for centuries — or a quiet courtyard spa tucked inside a riad, where the medina's noise drops away the moment the door closes.
This guide covers the real options: public hammams where locals go, riad spas that welcome non-guests, and practical notes on hair and nails. No inflated promises, no invented addresses — just what's actually on offer.
Hammams: the real Fez ritual

A hammam visit is steam, black soap (savon noir), and a vigorous kessa-glove scrub that leaves your skin feeling brand new. Every neighbourhood in Fez has a public hammam — tiled, steamy, social, and very cheap. They're single-sex with set hours or days for men and women, so ask your riad which nearby hammam is on the women's (or men's) schedule that day.
Public hammams are bring-your-own affairs: towel, flip-flops, a change of underwear, and a plastic mat to sit on. You can buy the black soap and kessa glove at any souk stall for a few dirhams. Nobody expects tourists to know the drill — watch what the regulars do, sit, sweat, scrub, rinse, and you'll leave glowing.
If the public-hammam scene feels like too much, several riads run private hammam sessions for guests and walk-ins, with an attendant doing the scrub for you. Ask at your accommodation — most medina riads can arrange one with a day's notice.

Fez's upmarket riads run some of the prettiest spas in Morocco — courtyards with fountains, treatment rooms in carved cedar, the works. Many accept outside bookings, which is the way to experience them without paying for the room.
Massage styles on offer are usually a mix of Moroccan (argan-oil based, firm), Swedish, and hot-stone. Book a day ahead in high season; same-day slots exist but the good therapists fill up.
Les Bains Amani (Palais Amani)
12 Derb El Miter, Rue Oued Zhoune, Fes 30000
The spa at Palais Amani, one of the medina's best-known luxury riads. Traditional hammam with exfoliation room, plus massages in garden-facing treatment rooms (and, in spring and autumn, a tented pergola on the roof terrace). The royal hammam ritual runs from hand-and-foot bath through black-soap scrub to body mask and wrap. Open to non-residents by booking.
Best for: A proper special-occasion spa afternoon
- Book ahead — it's popular with riad guests too
- The rooftop pergola massages are seasonal

Fez's new town (Ville Nouvelle, around Avenue Hassan II) has modern hair salons and nail studios at local prices — a blowout or manicure costs a fraction of what you'd pay at home. Walk in, point at what you want, and bring a photo if your French or Arabic is shaky.
Henna, on the other hand, belongs in the medina. You'll be offered it constantly around the tanneries and main squares; the artists working the tourist lanes are fast and cheap, but agree on the design and price before the cone touches your skin. For something more considered, ask your riad to recommend a henna artist who comes to you.
Practical tips
- Public hammams are single-sex with rotating schedules — confirm the right day before you go.
- Bring flip-flops, a towel, and a kessa glove; buy black soap in the souk for a few dirhams.
- Riad spas welcome non-guests but book a day ahead in high season.
- Agree on henna designs and prices before starting, especially with street artists.
Fez rewards slowness. A hammam at the end of a long medina day isn't a luxury here — it's how the city has always recovered.
