Things to do in Fez
Morocco's spiritual capital and home to the oldest medina in the world — Fes el-Bali, founded in the 9th century and still a living, working city. Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859, is the world's oldest university. The tanneries, the madrasas, the souks, the Sufi festivals: this is the deep Morocco, and it's magnificent.
This is the honest guide — what's on, what's worth your time, and what the city is actually like, built from an 11-event verified feed and 27 researched source tiers. Nothing invented.
What's on right now
The headline is the 18th Fes Festival of Sufi Culture and World Wisdom, running October 17–24, 2026 — evening concerts at Bab El Makina plus venues across the city (Jnan Sbil gardens, the Shems'y craft school, Souk Semmarine), under the theme 'Sufi Poetry: Elixir for Healing'. The opening concert on October 17 features arabo-andalusian chants and hadra. If your trip overlaps, book ahead — this is the one true festival week in Fez's autumn.
Football: Maghreb Fès vs ASEC Mimosas in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round (first leg) is listed for Saturday, October 17 at the Complexe Sportif de Fès — treat the exact day as provisional (CAF's window is October 16–18) and check kickoff closer to the date.
Earlier in the month: the Morocco88 Tour 2026 brings German and Moroccan school music clubs to a Fes stage on Sunday, October 4 (6pm; venue listed as 'Yamakane Center' — provisional), and the Souk de Bhalil runs its weekly Wednesday market October 7, 14, 21 and 28 in the village 22km northwest of the city.
One note on ticketing: the comedian Hassan El Fad's 'Hassan Jiddan' show plays the Mégarama Fès on Saturday, October 10 (8:30pm, from 220 MAD) — confirmed on the Guichet.com platform. We're listing it here as context only; ticketer terms don't currently permit us to carry their listings in the feed.

October 23–24: the ENCG Fès hosts its 1st International Congress on Morocco, Spain and Latin America (single-source announcement — provisional). November 11–12: IPE'26, the 2nd International Colloquium on Pedagogical Innovation & Employability, at the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University faculties.
Looking further out: the Journée Annuelle de Fès (Yawm Fès) lands on January 4, 2027 — the city's fixed annual celebration, a week of events around the medina. And the 2025 Moulay Idriss moussem ran mid-October; 2026 dates aren't confirmed, so watch fes.ma rather than guessing.

Fes el-Bali: the oldest medina in the world
Fez's medina is the largest living medieval city on earth — 9,000+ lanes, founded in the 9th century, and still a working city rather than a museum. Enter at Bab Boujloud (the Blue Gate, 1913 — blue tiles outside, green inside) and let a licensed guide lead your first morning; it's money well spent.
The non-negotiables: the Chouara Tannery (dye pits at their best before 11am — take the mint sprig), the Bou Inania Madrasa and Al-Attarine Madrasa (the two madrasas open to non-Muslims), and the souks by trade — Seffarine for metalwork, the dyers for colour, the pottery quarter for the kilns. Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 and the world's oldest university, is visible from outside; the mosque itself is for worshippers.

The spiritual capital
Fez is Morocco's spiritual capital, and it shows: the Sufi brotherhoods, the zaouias, the call to prayer rolling over the rooftops at dusk. The October Sufi Festival is the cultural expression of it; the rest of the year, the feeling is in the medina's rhythm — the quiet courtyards, the madrasas, the Jnan Sbil gardens at dusk when the whole old city seems to exhale.
Eat
Fez is Morocco's food capital. The signatures: pastilla (the sweet-savoury pie — this is the city that invented it), seven-vegetable Friday couscous, and tagines with prunes and almonds. Verified tables: The Ruined Garden (15 Derb Idrissy — lunch in a walled garden), Dar Roumana (30 Derb El Amer — refined Moroccan-Mediterranean), Darori Resto (2 Derb Seyour, evenings), Restaurant Dar Hatim (19 Derb Zaouia — chicken pastilla), and Café Clock (7 Derb El Magana — the camel burger, the rooftop, the cooking school). Our Fez restaurants guide has the full verified list.

Fez is not a nightlife city and this guide won't pretend otherwise: no clubs, no bar streets, the medina asleep by eleven. The evening is rooftops and dinners — Café Clock's terrace, Palais Amani's rooftop bar, the hotel lounges of the new town — and in festival season, the Sufi Festival's evening concerts at Bab El Makina. The honest Fez nightlife guide lays it out without invented venues.

Every Dayfari town guide is researched across 27 source tiers. Fez's feed merges 11 unique events from the October 2026 deep-dive; here's exactly where they came from — and where the gaps are. No padding, no invented listings.
Live and producing: T2 tourism DMO (the 18th Sufi Festival, Oct 17–24, via Moroccan press); T3 major venues (Morocco88 Tour Oct 4, MAS vs ASEC Mimosas Oct 17, Sufi opening concert); T6 universities (ENCG congress Oct 23–24, IPE'26 Nov 11–12); T7 community & culture (Sufi Festival community occurrence); T9 community submissions (inbox live globally — zero Fez submissions yet, a true zero); T10 recurring grassroots (Souk de Bhalil Wednesday instances); T13 religious institutions (Journée Annuelle de Fès, Jan 4 2027); T20 local news calendars (Sufi Festival via press surveillance); T22 performing arts (Morocco88 cross-tier).
Partial: T20 local news (press surveillance works; no standing agenda product exists); T22 performing arts (no published auditorium season recoverable).
Terminally empty, honestly: T1 municipal open data (data.gov.ma has no Fez event datasets); T4 libraries; T5 parks & recreation; T8 ticket aggregators (Ticketmaster: zero; local ticketers fail-closed on ToS — the Hassan El Fad Oct 10 show is documented as recon-only); T11 cultural institutes (Institut Français de Fès confirmed active, no published Oct–Dec programme); T14 amateur sports; T15 schools; T16 service clubs (Rotary/Lions active but members-only); T17 business associations; T18 seniors centres (no public-event surface in Morocco); T19 diaspora orgs (InterNations Fes is login-walled); T21 regional ticketing (blocked — Guichet.com CGU has no verifiable third-party copying clause); T23 garden centres; T24 Eventbrite (thin for Fez, zero upcoming); T25 animal welfare (no public event calendars); T27 malls (no published calendars). Not applicable: T12 independent cinemas (Mégarama is the city's only cinema — a chain); T26 pet-retail chains (none operate in Fez).
Fez was deferred on 2026-09-29 after the global breadth pass found zero events. This deep-dive — French, Arabic and English local sources — is the deferral answered.

Good to know
Getting around: the medina is walkable-only (and wonderful); petit taxis for the new town, grand taxis between towns. Money: dirhams (MAD); ATMs in the Ville Nouvelle, cash in the medina. When to go: October is ideal — warm days, cool nights, the Sufi Festival. Summer is fiercely hot; winter nights are cold. Friday is the holy day — couscous day, and some shops close midday.

Common questions
Is Fez safe? Yes — as safe as any major Moroccan tourist city. The medina's main risk is hassle (touts, 'guides'), not danger. After dark, take taxis door-to-door.
Can you drink alcohol in Fez? It's available but low-key — licensed hotel and riad bars only. The medina has no bars; Morocco's real drinks are mint tea and fresh juice.
How many days in Fez? Two full days covers the medina well; three lets you add a day trip (Volubilis/Meknès) or slow down. See our Fez itineraries.
Is the Sufi Festival the same as the Sacred Music Festival? No — the Festival of World Sacred Music (June) is the big international one; the Festival of Sufi Culture (October, 18th edition in 2026) is its autumn sibling, more intimate and more local.
