Fitness in Fez: Gyms, Running and Yoga
Fez is not a fitness destination, but staying active here is easy if you know where to look. The honest picture: hotel gyms for proper workouts, the medina itself for accidental cardio, and a handful of yoga and pool options.
No invented gym chains, no fake class schedules — just what's actually available.
Gyms: hotel fitness centres
The reliable gyms in Fez are the hotel gyms. The larger new-town hotels — the Barceló Fès Medina, the Marriott Jnan Palace, and the business hotels along the Avenue Hassan II corridor — run proper fitness centres, and several sell day passes or short memberships to non-guests. Call ahead: day-pass policies change, and some are guests-only in high season.
There is no big-box international gym chain with a Fez branch that we can verify. Local independent gyms exist in the Ville Nouvelle, but they rarely publish schedules online and most operate in French/Arabic — fine if you're staying a while, not practical for a short trip.

The best run in Fez is the perimeter walk: from Bab Boujloud along the outside of the medina walls toward the Borj Nord, then back — wide paths, views over the old city, and far fewer obstacles than inside. Early morning is the time; the light is good and the streets are quiet.
Inside the medina, don't run — walk. A full day of medina exploring is 15,000+ steps with stairs, and that's before the hills. Jnan Sbil gardens work for a gentle morning loop on flat paths, and the Ville Nouvelle's broad avenues are the only place in the city where a proper road run is practical.

Morning yoga happens at a handful of riads — Palais Amani runs drop-in morning classes (by the fire in winter, on the rooftop at sunrise in warmer months), and several other medina riads offer private sessions if you ask. These are aimed at guests but often open to outsiders for a fee.
Hotel pools double as the swimming option: the Barceló and the larger new-town hotels have outdoor pools, usually open to non-guests for a day fee. In summer, that's the best workout in the city.
Practical tips
- Summer heat is serious — train before 9am or after 6pm from June to September.
- The medina's stairs and hills are a genuine workout; count your sightseeing as cardio.
- Ask your hotel about gym access before booking if it matters to you.
- Ramadan changes schedules — gyms and pools may run reduced hours.
Train early, explore after. Fez is kinder to the fit — the medina is a workout whether you plan it or not.
