Indoor Activities in Fez

Fez is an outdoor city, but the midday summer heat and the occasional winter rain send everyone inside. The good news: Fez's indoor options are excellent — museums, hammams, workshops, and the medina's covered souks.

What to do when the sun (or the rain) says no.

Museums and madrasas

The coolest rooms in the city, literally.

The Dar Batha Museum (Musée Al Batha) is Fez's main museum — a 19th-century palace holding the region's woodcarving, ironwork, embroidery, ceramics, and jewellery, around a garden courtyard. Reopened in 2025 after restoration, it's calm, compact, and the best indoor hour in the city.

The Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts, in the beautiful Nejjarine foundouk, is smaller and quieter — carpenters' tools, chests, and musical instruments in a stunning courtyard. The Al-Attarine and Bou Inania madrasas are half-indoors: covered courtyards of tilework and carved cedar, cool even at midday.

A hammam is Fez's original indoor activity — steam, scrub, and an hour that resets you completely. Public hammams are cheap and local; riad hammams (like Les Bains Amani at Palais Amani) are private and polished. Either way, it's the best use of a hot afternoon.

Cooking classes run 3–4 hours indoors: the Café Clock school and the Palais Amani rooftop school both start with a souk run and end with lunch you made. Pottery workshops and calligraphy sessions at cultural centres fill a rainy morning well.

The kissarias — the covered markets — are the medina's natural air conditioning. The Kissaria Seraghin and the textile kissarias are vaulted, shaded, and full of fabric, clothing, and tailors. Even if you're not buying, they're the pleasantest walk in the medina at midday.

When all else fails: find a café. Café Clock's interior rooms, the new-town espresso bars, and any riad courtyard with a fountain are built for long, slow afternoons. Order a nous-nous, then a mint tea, then another nous-nous. Nobody will hurry you.

Practical tips

Rain in Fez is rare and brief — but the indoor city is good enough that you won't mind it.
