Hidden Gems in Fez

Everyone sees the tanneries and the Blue Gate. But Fez rewards the curious — the city is full of corners that most visitors walk straight past: quiet madrasas, weavers' lanes, viewpoints nobody mentions, and workshops where the real work happens.

These are the places worth seeking out. No tourist traps, no 'secret' spots that are secret for a reason.

Quiet corners of the medina

The medina's best rooms are the empty ones.

The Al-Attarine Madrasa gets a fraction of Bou Inania's visitors and is arguably more beautiful — a jewel-box courtyard of zellige, carved cedar, and stucco, usually quiet enough to hear the fountain. It's a five-minute walk from the tannery crowds and feels like a different century.

The Seffarine Square coppersmiths are famous, but the lanes behind it — the dyers' workshops, the weavers on their looms — are where the work actually happens. Ask before photographing; a small tip opens doors.

The Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts (in the beautiful Nejjarine foundouk) is the medina's best small museum that nobody visits — woodcarving tools, chests, and instruments in a stunning courtyard building.

Viewpoints and the edges

The Merenid Tombs at sunset: everyone knows the viewpoint exists, almost nobody goes. The ruined tombs on the hill north of Fes el-Bali give the full panorama — the whole medina, the hills, the light going gold. Take a taxi up; walking back down at dusk is fine.

The Mellah at golden hour: the old Jewish quarter's balconied streets are at their most beautiful in late light, and the 17th-century Ibn Danan synagogue is a quiet marvel. Pair it with the Royal Palace's seven doors nearby (exterior only, but the doors are the sight).

Bhalil's cave houses: the troglodyte village 22km northwest of Fez, where families still live in carved-out hillside homes. Pair with the Wednesday souk if the days align — it's the region's most unusual half-day.

Practical tips

The famous sights earn their fame. But the corners above are the Fez you'll actually remember.
