Day trips

Day trips from Phillaur

Phillaur’s position is its superpower: the Grand Trunk Road makes it a launchpad in every direction. West to the Mughal sarais, south to Ludhiana in 15 minutes, north to Jalandhar — and honestly, the best day trip of all is in reverse: Phillaur from Ludhiana on the 14-minute train.

The launchpad

Most towns make you choose: stay local or burn a day on the road. Phillaur doesn’t, because the Grand Trunk Road was here first. Everything below is under an hour, most of it under half an hour — and the railway station (Phillaur Jn) keeps you off the highway entirely for the two best ones.

Where to go

Nurmahal — the Mughal sarai

~25 minutes west by road; direct train from Phillaur Jn

Noor Jahan’s childhood town, and the next stage west on the old Agra–Lahore road after Phillaur. The Sarai Nurmahal (circa 1618, built under Noor Jahan’s supervision) is a centrally protected monument — a walled quadrangle with a great western gateway carved with elephants and camels. Trains run direct from Phillaur Jn, about five a day, ~32 minutes.

Ludhiana — the big city

~16 km south; 15 minutes by road, ~14 minutes by hourly train

Punjab’s industrial giant: Lodhi Fort (the ~500-year-old fort Sikander Lodhi built), Rakh Bagh park, the 19th-century mosque at Bheer, Gurudwara Manji Sahib — and everything a highway town lacks: malls, multiplexes, real nightlife. Hourly trains from Phillaur Jn make it the easiest excursion on this list.

Jalandhar — the northern anchor

~40 minutes north up NH-44

The nearest big city north: Devi Talab Mandir, the Pushpa Gujral Science City just outside town, and Punjab’s sports-goods capital. The natural full-day option if Nurmahal and Ludhiana feel too easy.

The reverse trip — Phillaur from Ludhiana

Ludhiana Jn → Phillaur Jn, ~14 minutes, hourly

The day trip that deserves its own line: hop the hourly train, walk the fort (confirm access first), eat on the dhaba belt, see the old road and the gurudwara, and ride back for dinner. One of Punjab’s simplest, cheapest great days out.

How to string them together

Two days: day one is Phillaur itself (see the itineraries page), day two goes west to Nurmahal’s sarai in the morning and south to Ludhiana in the afternoon — the Mughal road and the modern city back to back. Three days: add Jalandhar. The trains (Phillaur Jn → Ludhiana Jn hourly, Phillaur Jn → Nurmahal five times daily) mean you can do most of this without a car.
