Itineraries

Phillaur itineraries

You don’t need three days for Phillaur. You need one day done right — and ideally a second day for the Mughal road. These itineraries are built for real arrival patterns: the GT Road road-trip stopover, the Ludhiana day trip, and the full two-day version.

Itinerary 1: The perfect day (the road-trip stopover)

Morning — the fort. Arrive early at Phillaur Fort on the Grand Trunk Road: the red-brick walls and European bastions Ranjit Singh’s Dewan Mohkam Chand built in 1809 with Generals Ventura, Allard and Avitabile advising; the small police museum; the Pir Baba Abdullah Shah Ji shrine under one of the domes. Confirm the visiting arrangement first — it’s a working police academy, not a walk-in museum.

Midday — the old road and the bazaar. Drive the surviving stretch of the old GT Road along the railway bridge toward Ludhiana, then eat lunch in the town: a dhaba on NH-1, sarson da saag and makki di roti in winter. Walk it off in the bazaar lanes off the highway and pay respects at Gurdwara Sri Bauli Sahib Ji.

Afternoon — the poet. Read some Ibn-e-Insha before you come — his travelogues are the funniest Urdu writing of the 20th century — and know you’re walking the town that made him. Then get back on the GT Road by late afternoon, mission accomplished.

Itinerary 2: The Ludhiana day trip

Hourly trains run Ludhiana Jn → Phillaur Jn in about 14 minutes, which makes this one of Punjab’s easiest day trips. Morning fort visit (confirm access), midday dhaba lunch on the Bakapur belt, afternoon at Gurdwara Sri Bauli Sahib Ji and the old road stretch, evening train back — with a second dhaba dinner if you’re not ready to leave. The whole day costs less than a multiplex ticket plus popcorn.

Itinerary 3: The Mughal road two-dayer

Day one is the perfect day above. Day two goes west: ~25 minutes to Nurmahal, Noor Jahan’s childhood town, for the Sarai Nurmahal (circa 1618, centrally protected monument) with its great carved western gateway. Two sarais, two empires, one road — the Mughal road from Agra to Lahore ran Ludhiana → Phillaur → Nurmahal → Nakodar in exactly this order, and you can still walk the stage.

How to use these

All times are guidance, not timetables — Phillaur doesn’t do timed entry or booked tables. The fort is the only piece that needs a phone call ahead. Everything else is: show up, eat, walk.

Common questions

What is the best itinerary for Phillaur?

One perfect day: morning at Phillaur Fort (confirm access first), midday on the old GT Road and at a dhaba on NH-1, afternoon at Gurdwara Sri Bauli Sahib Ji and in Ibn-e-Insha's birthplace town. Add a second day for Nurmahal's Mughal sarai, 25 minutes west.

Can Phillaur be done in a day from Ludhiana?

Easily — hourly trains take about 14 minutes from Ludhiana Jn to Phillaur Jn, and the drive is about 15 minutes on NH-44. It's one of Punjab's simplest day trips.

What should I combine with Phillaur?

Nurmahal's Mughal sarai (25 minutes west) is the natural pairing — the next stage on the old Agra–Lahore road. Ludhiana (15 minutes south) and Jalandhar (about 40 minutes north) anchor either end.
