Six day trips from a city that sits in the middle of all of them: a free national park, Inca ruins, artisan towns, a 250-ft cloud-forest waterfall, and thermal baths 15 minutes out. All verified (2026-10-01), distances approximate, altitude warnings where earned.

The six, ranked by effort

Six day trips, from the 15-minute thermal soak to the two-hour Inca ruins:

El Cajas National Park

~30 km west, 45-60 min - FREE park access

235+ lagoons at 3,160-4,450 m. Toreadora loop (2.2 km), Uku (1.7 km), Ilincocha (300 m), Naturaleza e Historia Humana (4.2 km), Cerro San Luis (2.2 km, 4,264 m), Tres Cruces (8-10 km), Valle de Quinuas (8.1 km), the 18 km Inca Trail (2 days). The Toreadora visitor center has info, a cafeteria and shelter; register longer routes with the rangers. Guided small-group tours run ~$48-115. The altitude warning applies double here.

Banos de Cuenca thermal baths

~6 km west (IN the 25 km radius), 15 min, taxi ~$5

Piedra de Agua Spa & Fuente Termal: volcanic-rock spa, 3 thermal pools, 4 hot/cold contrast baths, 4 steam baths. Monday to Saturday 7:00-22:00, Sunday 7:00-21:00; from ~$20 a person with 2x1 weekday promos; budget pools elsewhere $2-6. NOT Banos de Agua Santa - that famous thermal town is near Tungurahua, hours away.

Gualaceo & Chordeleg

~35-40 km east

The artisan towns: Chordeleg's filigree jewelry, Gualaceo's makana weaving workshops. Private tours from ~$55. The culture-retail page covers the in-town buying; this is the source trip.

El Chorro de Giron waterfall + Laguna de Busa

~45-50 km southwest - $3 waterfall + $2 Busa lake

A 250-ft cascade in cloud forest - bromeliads, orchids, the full green wall. The Tarqui Valley drive is part of the trip; the Casa de los Tratados museum stop adds the history. GetYourGuide day trips from ~$45.

Ingapirca archaeological complex

~80 km north (2 h) - $2 ruins entry

Ecuador's major Canari-Inca site, with the elliptical Temple of the Sun. Combos with Gualaceo and Chordeleg run ~$60-65 group (Polylepis Tours via Expedia, 2026), usually including the Inca Face rock formation and the Virgen del Rocio sanctuary stop. The longest day on this list - worth it.

Azogues

~30 km north (borderline)

The cathedral town with the Virgen de la Nube - a mention-only entry at research time: borderline on the 25 km radius, listed here for the day-trip page, distance to verify.

How to choose

One free day: El Cajas in the morning (start early, acclimatized) or Banos de Cuenca any afternoon - the thermal baths pair naturally with a Turi sunset on the way back. Two days: add Gualaceo and Chordeleg for the artisan workshops. The full week: Ingapirca deserves its own day, and the Giron waterfall rewards the cloud-forest-inclined.

All distances approximate; verify at booking. The day-trip pages are not radius-bound the way the events feed is - El Cajas, Gualaceo, Chordeleg and Azogues sit outside the 25 km feed radius and are covered here instead. Facts verified 2026-10-01.

Common questions

What is the best day trip from Cuenca?

El Cajas National Park (~30 km, free access, 235+ lagoons) for nature; Ingapirca (~80 km, $2 entry, Temple of the Sun) for archaeology; Gualaceo and Chordeleg (~35-40 km) for artisan workshops. Banos de Cuenca (~6 km) is the easy half-day thermal trip.

How far is Ingapirca from Cuenca?

~80 km north, about 2 hours. The $2 ruins entry covers the Canari-Inca complex with the elliptical Temple of the Sun; group combos with Gualaceo and Chordeleg run ~$60-65.

Is Banos de Cuenca the same as Banos de Agua Santa?

No. Banos de Cuenca (Azuay, ~6 km from the center, Piedra de Agua thermal spa) is not Banos de Agua Santa, the famous thermal town near Tungurahua hours to the north.
