The Maharaja Duleep Singh Memorial: the kothi where the last Sikh maharaja spent the night of 31 December 1849 on his way into exile, declared a memorial in 2015 with INTACH restoration. The easiest and most rewarding run from town.

Malerkotla

~30 km southwest - half to full day

The town whose nawab's line Guru Gobind Singh blessed at Raikot - shahi buildings, an old Muslim-heritage quarter unlike anywhere else in Malwa, and a completely different food lane. Taxis or buses from the Raikot stand.

Jagraon

~30 km north - half day

Gurudwara Nanaksar and the town's own old bazaars. Pairs well with a slow morning in Raikot.

The big one: Ludhiana

Ludhiana, 35-40 km and about 45 minutes by bus or car, is the full-day trip: the Nehru Rose Garden, the Maharaja Ranjit Singh War Museum, what's left of Lodhi Fort, and a food scene several orders of magnitude bigger than Raikot's. In January or February, check whether the Qila Raipur Rural Olympics are on - bullock cart races, kabaddi, tractor stunts - it's near Ludhiana and worth building the whole day around.

Tracing the Guru's route

Raikot sits on Guru Gobind Singh's 1705 journey. Machhiwara (Gurudwara Charankanwal Sahib, where the Guru rested in the wilderness) lies to the northeast, and Alamgir - the stop between Machhiwara and Raikot - is on Ludhiana's edge. Doing all three in a day is the pilgrim's version of the Ludhiana run.
