Winter

Winter in Bracebridge: the tube run downtown, the ski trails north, the warm halls

Winter here is not a closed season -- it is the town's second festival season. A main street becomes a tube run for a day, the trail centre grooms sixteen kilometres of ski track all winter, and the new community centre carries the evenings. Here is the winter at its true size.

The cold season at full size

the town's trail system is a waterfall system. The Bracebridge Resource Management Centre, a few minutes north off Highway 11, carries some 19 kilometres of hiking and mountain-bike trails in the warm months and more than 16 kilometres of groomed classic and skate ski trails in winter, maintained by the Town and volunteers. Wilson's Falls, on the north branch north of downtown, is the wildest of the town's falls on the trail accounts -- a short trail to the falls, the rapids below and a 1909 hydro station in the woods. The Trans Canada Trail stitches the set together: High Falls, Potts Falls and Little High Falls on the north branch, the Bracebridge Bay Trail along the river walkway below the downtown falls, and the Strawberry Point reach toward Lake Muskoka.

The trail centre is the winter engine: the Bracebridge Resource Management Centre grooms just over 16 kilometres of classic and skate ski trails through the Shield woods off Highway 11, with snowshoeing beside them, maintained by the Town and its volunteers on the trail accounts. The second winter form is the one-day street party -- Fire and Ice, on the last Saturday of January -- and the third is indoors: the Muskoka Lumber Community Centre's arena and fieldhouse, the Sportsplex's pool and climbing wall, and the Caisse and Norwood calendars, which do not stop for snow.

trails in brief: the Resource Management Centre's 19 km network (16-plus km groomed for skiing in winter), Wilson's Falls, the High Falls trio on the Trans Canada Trail, and the Bracebridge Bay Trail below the downtown falls.

The street party

Fire and Ice Festival, last Saturday of January

Manitoba Street under trucked-in snow as a tube run, Memorial Park's skating trail and Winter Village, lumberjack shows and ice sculpture by day, fire artists and Silver Bridge fireworks at 6. The 2026 edition ran January 31, $10 ages six and up on the season's listings.

The warm halls

Muskoka Lumber Community Centre + Sportsplex

the Muskoka Lumber Community Centre in brief: 56 Salmon Avenue, opened 2024, completed 2025 -- NHL-size arena (1,019 seats), fieldhouse, auditorium, walking track and the public library; the town's indoor calendar lives there. the Sportsplex in brief: 110 Clearbrook Trail -- aquatic centre, gymnastics, climbing wall and fitness programmes on the Town's grid.

The falls in winter

Bracebridge Falls in brief: the north branch of the Muskoka River dropping through the middle of town below Manitoba Street, with Bracebridge Bay and Lake Muskoka below; the Silver Bridge is closed for rehabilitation at build time (Town target: late 2026) -- check the Town's surfaces for its status. The river runs all winter under the ice at its edges, and the falls in a cold snap are the town's winter portrait -- viewed from the shore and the bridge corridor, on the Town's signage, never walked on: river ice at a falls is not a trail, in any month, and this guide proposes no ice activity at the falls it cannot source.

What winter here is not

There is no downhill ski hill seated in Bracebridge, and none is claimed. Arrowhead Provincial Park's celebrated skating trail is Huntsville's, an honest day trip north on this guide's day-trips pages -- named as Huntsville's, never borrowed. Santa's Village is a warm-season park on its published seasons; its winter form is read with the park.

Common questions

Can you cross-country ski in Bracebridge?

Yes, all winter: the Bracebridge Resource Management Centre grooms just over 16 km of classic and skate trails off Highway 11, with snowshoeing in the same woods, on the Town-maintained trail accounts. Trail conditions and any fees live with the Town and the trail council.

What is the Fire and Ice Festival?

Downtown Bracebridge's winter carnival, the last Saturday of January: a snow tube run down Manitoba Street, a skating trail in Memorial Park, lumberjack shows, ice sculpture, fire artists and closing fireworks. The 2026 edition ran January 31, 9 to 6.

What is open in Bracebridge in winter?

The ski and snowshoe trails, the Muskoka Lumber Community Centre and the Sportsplex (arena, fieldhouse, pool, climbing), the Caisse Theatre and the Norwood, the brewery taproom, and the town itself. The river cruise and Santa's Village are warm-season forms on their operators' grids.
