Hidden gems in Phuket: the island's quiet corners

Hidden gems

Illustration of Phuket's quiet corners: a fishing-village cove, a pastel old-town lane, giant lotus leaves — the island beyond the brochures

Phuket's famous half is famous for a reason, but the island keeps a quieter half for people who walk slowly: alleys in the Old Town that reward the unhurried, coves on the east coast where the fishing village outnumbers the sunbeds, and one lotus pond that looks like a film set. Nine verified gems (2026-10-01) — none of them require a tour bus.

Old Town's quiet layer

The Old Town alleys reward slow walking. Go early for the light, go after 6 pm for the lane life — and verify current opening of the small shrines, which keep their own hours.

Soi Romanee

Old Town (Thalang-Dibuk)

125m pastel lane; ex-red-light-district turned photo street; cafes/bars alive after 6pm; monthly jazz night last Sunday Nov-Apr (high season)

Shrine of the Serene Light (Sang Tham Shrine)

Old Town (off Phang Nga Rd)

Hokkien shrine, built 1889; oldest/finest, ceramic roof + murals + courtyard garden

Phuket Amulet Market

Old Town

Locals examining amulets with magnifying glasses; haggle-friendly

Old Town street art

Old Town

Murals in side alleys (kite girl on Soi Romanee); self-guided art hunt

The Memory at On On Hotel

Old Town

'The Beach' (2000) film location; Sino-Portuguese hotel

Soi Romanee is the 125-metre pastel lane between Thalang and Dibuk — an ex-red-light district turned photo street, with cafes and bars alive after 6 pm and a monthly jazz night on the last Sunday, November to April. Tucked off Phang Nga Road, the Shrine of the Serene Light (Sang Tham, built 1889) is the oldest and finest Hokkien shrine: ceramic roof, murals, a courtyard garden. The amulet market is pure local theatre — collectors examining amulets with magnifying glasses, haggle-friendly. The street-art hunt runs through the side alleys (the kite girl on Soi Romanee is the landmark), and the Memory at On On Hotel is the Sino-Portuguese hotel from the film The Beach (2000).

The quiet coast

East-coast coves and one offshore speck, all inside the radius, all blissfully short on crowds.

Ao Yon Beach

East coast

Residential-area cove, fishing village; locals' quiet beach

Banana Beach

Between Bang Tao and Nai Thon

Hard-to-find snorkel cove; ask locals; trail from main road

Koh Bon

Rawai coast

1.2km undeveloped island; longtail day trip; one restaurant

Ma Doo Bua

Cherng Talay

Lotus-pond cafe; photogenic giant lotus leaves; 16.1 km IN

Ao Yon on the east coast is a residential-area cove with a fishing village — the locals' quiet beach. Banana Beach, tucked between Bang Tao and Nai Thon, is the hard-to-find snorkel cove: ask locals, follow the trail from the main road. Koh Bon off the Rawai coast is 1.2 km of undeveloped island with one restaurant, reached by longtail day trip. And Ma Doo Bua in Cherng Talay — 16.1 km in — is the lotus-pond cafe with the photogenic giant lotus leaves.
