Hiking in Phuket: viewpoint climbs, honest grades

Hiking trails

Let us be honest up front: Phuket 'hiking' is viewpoint climbing. There is no multi-day network here — there are steep jungle pitches that end at a 45-metre Buddha or a 360-degree panorama, and that is exactly the point. Trails wash out in the rainy season (July–October); the window is November to June. Eight verified routes (2026-10-01), with one important access note.

The Big Buddha climbs

Nakkerd Hill is the island's hiking centrepiece, and the approaches are the two most rewarding walks in Phuket. Important: the Big Buddha approach route was reported partially inaccessible as of January 2025 (AllTrails) — check current access locally before committing to the full ascent, and dress modestly at the top (covered shoulders and knees; sarongs are lent).

Kata Beach to Big Buddha trail

Kata to Nakkerd Hill

7.6km out-and-back, 404m gain; steep, rope sections; 3-4h; most rewarding island hike

Karon to Big Buddha trail

Karon foothills

~5km, moderate-hard; steeper jungle route; 3-4h

Big Buddha - Bang Wad Reservoir loop

Chalong (Kathu side)

~5.8mi extended loop through forest from reservoir; 3.5-4h

The Kata-to-Big-Buddha trail is the classic: 7.6 km out-and-back, 404 metres of gain, steep with rope sections, three to four hours — the most rewarding hike on the island. The Karon side is shorter at around 5 km but steeper jungle, moderate-hard, also three to four hours. The Bang Wad Reservoir loop extends things to about 5.8 miles through forest from the Kathu side.

Rainforest and easy walks

The island's only virgin rainforest sits in the north-central hills; the easy viewpoints need no boots at all.

Khao Phra Thaeo Non-Hunting Area

Thalang (north-central)

22 sq km; island's only virgin rainforest; Ton Sai to Bang Pae waterfalls trail (2-8km); Gibbon Rehabilitation Project at Bang Pae

Chalong Dam southwest loop

Chalong

3.7mi forest loop; easy-moderate

Kata-Karon hiking trail

Kata-Karon

Trail between the two beaches; moderate; big-Buddha viewpoints

Khao Rang hill walk

Above Phuket Town

Easy viewpoint drive/walk; cafes with view

Patong hill roads

Patong hillside

Night panorama over Bangla/Patong Bay (viewpoint, not trail)

Khao Phra Thaeo is 22 square kilometres of the real thing — the Ton Sai to Bang Pae waterfalls trail runs 2 to 8 km, and the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project sits at Bang Pae. The Chalong Dam southwest loop is an easy-moderate 3.7-mile forest circuit. The Kata-Karon trail links the two beaches with Big-Buddha viewpoints along the way. Khao Rang above Phuket Town is the drive-up panorama with view cafes, and the Patong hill roads are a night panorama over Bangla and Patong Bay — a viewpoint, not a trail, but worth the ride up.
