Town guide

Grimsby, Ontario — a Lake Ontario town under the Escarpment

Grimsby sits on the south shore of Lake Ontario, tucked between the lake and the Niagara Escarpment at the western edge of Niagara Region. It counts 28,883 residents (Statistics Canada, 2021 Census, Town of Grimsby census subdivision) — the only population figure this guide uses. It is a real town with its own council, its own junior hockey club founded in 1922, its own library and art gallery sharing one building, and a farmers' market the market itself runs on Thursday afternoons in season. Said up front, because directories get these wrong: Grimsby has no cinema, no agricultural fair, no enclosed mall and no college or university campus — the town's strengths are elsewhere, and they are genuine.

Photos for Grimsby are still on their way. Every listing below is real.

Grimsby in one page

The Town of Grimsby anchors this guide at 43.1994, −79.5830 — Town Hall, 160 Livingston Avenue, in the America/Toronto time zone, where Mayor Jeff A. Jordan and eight councillors (two per ward across four wards) sit, with Victoria Steele as Town Clerk. The guide's coverage radius is 10 kilometres from Town Hall, which takes in the whole municipality: 68.71 km² stretched east–west along the lakeshore under the Escarpment. Since May 1, 2023, council business runs through five standing committees — Corporate Services, Finance, Community Services, Public Works, and Planning and Development — and agendas and minutes back to 2005 are published through the Town's eScribe portal.

Two neighbours sit inside that 10 km circle, and this guide keeps them firmly separate: Hamilton (Stoney Creek) to the west and Lincoln (Beamsville) to the east are their own towns with their own records. Near Grimsby is not in Grimsby — everything on these pages is seated in the Town of Grimsby itself, by its own address. One name runs the other way: the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, at 169 Main Street East, stands in Grimsby despite its name — the name records the West Niagara area it serves, not where it sits, and the new hospital building opened on November 24, 2025 (Hamilton Health Sciences' own account).

The wider world also contains a much larger Grimsby in Lincolnshire, England, and search results mix the two constantly. Nothing from the English town — its minster, its shopping centre, its music venues — appears anywhere in this guide.

The institutions that actually sit here

For a town of 28,883, Grimsby carries a full civic bench. The Major Refrigeration Peach King Centre, at 162 Livingston Avenue — immediately beside Town Hall — is the Town's recreation hub: twin ice pads, an outdoor rink, a splash pad, an auditorium and a fitness centre, expanded and fully reopened with a grand opening on Saturday, January 24, 2026. The Livingston Activity Centre, at 18 Livingston Avenue, houses the Grimsby Seniors Club and the Town's Seniors Active Living Centre programming. The Grimsby Public Library and the Grimsby Public Art Gallery share one complex at 18 Carnegie Lane — the library is the Town's own single branch, and its programme calendar runs on the Town's community calendar (calendar.grimsby.ca), the same spine that carries the whole town's listings and takes public event submissions.

Health and safety follow the seat rule too. The hospital above is a Hamilton Health Sciences site seated in Grimsby. Fire protection is the Town's own Grimsby Fire Department (which was actively recruiting volunteer firefighters in the Town's 2026 campaign at the time of research). Policing is the Niagara Regional Police Service — a regional body, attributed to Niagara Region, not dressed up as a town force. Schools are run by two boards headquartered in St. Catharines — the headquarters are that city's record; the schools themselves are Grimsby's, and they are listed on the families page.

A year in Grimsby, season by season

Spring opens the cultural year with the Wayzgoose Book Arts Fair at the Public Art Gallery — private press printers, bookbinders and printmakers, running since 1979 on the last Saturday in April; the 2026 edition ran Saturday, April 25, with free admission. Summer belongs to the lake and the parks: the Town's own programme ran its Canada Day production on July 1 (its seat conflicts across the records — a regional roundup says the Grimsby Museum, another record says Coronation Park — and the conflict is carried, not merged), Music in the Park on Thursday evenings through July and August, and Movies in the Park at dusk in August — all 2026 editions now past, and this guide does not invent their 2027 dates.

Autumn is the town's busiest honest season. The Grimsby Farmers' Market runs Thursday afternoons until Thanksgiving (see the note on its seat below). The Town's fall page stages the Moonlight Market & Movie on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at Coronation Park and the Grimsby Glows Pumpkin Parade on Sunday, November 1. The curling club's own calendar opens the ice in October, the library's Author Series runs October 23 and November 27, and Remembrance Day, November 11, is marked at the cenotaph beside the Grimsby Museum.

Winter's flagship is the 69th Annual Grimsby Santa Claus Parade — Saturday, December 5, 2026, at 5:15 p.m., theme “Christmas Night of Lights”, running eastbound along Livingston Avenue and Main Street West. The Rotary Club's Fantasy of Trees at the Grimsby Museum is a tradition of more than 25 years with free admission — but its 2026 dates were not published on the surfaces reached when this guide was built, so none are printed here; check the Rotary Club and the Museum in November.

The honest negatives, and one flagged conflict

No fair. No agricultural society is seated in Grimsby in the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies directory. The area's society is the West Niagara Agricultural Society, seated at Grassie in West Lincoln — its fair (September 11–13, 2026) is West Lincoln's record, even though the fairgrounds sit only a few kilometres south of the Escarpment and some aggregators mislabel them “Grimsby”. No cinema: the town's only picture house, the Roxy at 25 Main Street East, closed on November 13, 1983 and was demolished; showtime listings “near Grimsby” are St. Catharines and Hamilton theatres. No mall: the principal shopping hub is the open-air Grimsby Square at 44 Livingston Avenue. No flights: the town's own airfield, Grimsby Air Park (CNZ8), is a private general-aviation field with no scheduled service — the gateways are Hamilton's airport first and Toronto Pearson second, both named on the newcomers page with their road classes labelled as classes.

The market's seat, flagged and not merged: the Grimsby Farmers' Market's own description runs it Thursdays 3:00–7:00 p.m. from the beginning of June until Thanksgiving, and the staged 2026 series — 19 Thursdays, June 4 to October 8 — split its seats: the first three weeks downtown on Main Street East, then the Peach King Centre parking lot behind Town Hall (the lot's address prints as 160 Livingston Avenue in the market's own wording; the Centre itself is 162). A food-map directory gives different hours (2:00–6:30 p.m.) and a late-May start, and older framings put the whole season downtown from May. Those variants are recorded, not blended: the operator's current-season record governs, and its final 2026 market day was Thursday, October 8, 2026.

Getting around the guide

Start with the events page for every dated listing this guide can stand behind, the weekend page for an honest read on the next few days, and the things-to-do page for the standing attractions — the Escarpment trails at Beamer Memorial Conservation Area, the Painted Ladies of Grimsby Beach, Nelles Manor's 1798 house, and Peach Kings hockey nights. Families, students, seniors, newcomers and sports each get their own page, written from the same records and the same rule: if a date, price or address could not be verified from the operator's own surface, it is not printed as settled.

Common questions

How many people live in Grimsby, Ontario?

28,883, from Statistics Canada's 2021 Census for the Town of Grimsby census subdivision — the figure this guide uses throughout. (A random-rounded variant of the same count circulates in one Ontario table; it is not a second population, and this guide does not print it.)

Is the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in West Lincoln?

No — it stands at 169 Main Street East in Grimsby. The name records the West Niagara area it serves. The new hospital opened November 24, 2025.

Does Grimsby have a fall fair?

No. The West Niagara Fair (September 11–13, 2026) belongs to the West Niagara Agricultural Society, seated at Grassie in West Lincoln — a neighbouring town's event, however close the fairgrounds are.

Is there a cinema in Grimsby?

No. The Roxy Theatre on Main Street East closed in 1983 and was demolished. The nearest cinemas are in St. Catharines and Hamilton.

When is the 2026 Santa Claus Parade?

Saturday, December 5, 2026 at 5:15 p.m. — the 69th annual parade, running eastbound on Livingston Avenue and Main Street West.
