Oaxaca is generous to the broke traveler: the best square, the best walk, the best weekly dance party and a genuinely good free museum. Twelve picks, all genuinely free (October 2026).

The center, free

The Zocalo

Plaza de la Constitucion, Centro

The main square is the city's living room and it costs nothing: the bandstand, the portales, the people-watching. Come twice -- once at midday, once after dark.

Santo Domingo atrium and exterior

Macedonio Alcala, north end

The baroque church-and-convent complex is Oaxaca's architectural peak. The atrium, the facade and the surrounding plaza are free; the convent's Museo de las Culturas charges entry.

The Andador Turistico

Macedonio Alcala, pedestrian street

The pedestrian spine from the Zocalo to Santo Domingo: street musicians, galleries, the whole passing parade. The walk itself is the attraction.

Barrio de Jalatlaco

East of Santo Domingo

The prettiest free walk in the city: cobbled streets, bougainvillea, the San Matias church. Golden hour is the time.

Parque Juarez El Llano

North of Centro

The big city park: shaded paths, weekend families, the occasional festival (the Mole de Caderas festival sets up here October 10-11).

Free culture

Miercoles de Danzon

Zocalo, Wednesdays 5-8 pm

Every Wednesday the main square becomes an open-air dance floor: danzon with a live band, all ages, free, running through December 30. The most joyful free event in the city.

Museo de la Filatelia (MUFI)

Reforma 504, Centro

Free entry to the stamp museum -- art, history and a beautiful building behind Santo Domingo.

MUPO public spaces

Independencia 607, Centro

The Museo de los Pintores Oaxaquenos charges for some exhibits, but its public spaces -- the patio, the building -- are free to wander.

Market browsing

Benito Juarez, 20 de Noviembre, La Merced

Walking the markets costs nothing and teaches you more than most museums: the smoke aisle, the chapuline sellers, the chocolate grinders.

Seasonal freebies

From October 31 the comparsas -- costumed death parades with brass bands -- flood the streets for Dia de Muertos: free to watch, unforgettable. December 23 brings Noche de Rabanos to the Zocalo, free and packed. Both are on our city guide with dates.

The honest exception: the Jardin Etnobotanico behind Santo Domingo is guided-tours-only and charges entry -- it's worth it, but budget for it. Everything else on this page is genuinely free.

What can you do for free in Oaxaca?

Plenty: the Zocalo, Santo Domingo atrium, the Andador walk, Jalatlaco, El Llano, Wednesday danzon in the square, the free MUFI stamp museum, market browsing, and seasonal comparsas.

No -- it's guided tours only with an entry fee. Worth budgeting for; everything else on this page is genuinely free.

When is danzon in the Zocalo?

Wednesdays 5-8 pm (Miercoles de Danzon), running through December 30. Free, all ages, live band.
