Afternoon rain is a season here, not a surprise -- and Oaxaca's museum district is the answer. Six museums plus the workshops and tastings that eat a rainy afternoon well (October 2026).

Rainy afternoons, handled

June through September is the rainy season: bright mornings, afternoon downpours. Oaxaca's answer is one of the densest museum districts in Mexico -- all within walking distance of the Zocalo.

Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca

Santo Domingo convent, Macedonio Alcala

The big one: inside the Santo Domingo convent, with the Mixtec gold of Tomb 7 as the centerpiece. Allow two hours; the building rivals the collection.

Museo Textil de Oaxaca

Hidalgo 917, Centro

Textiles as living culture in a restored 18th-century building, with workshops running alongside the exhibitions -- the permanent 'Costuras y composturas' workshop runs all year.

MUPO

Independencia 607, Centro

The Museo de los Pintores Oaxaquenos: Oaxacan painters past and present in a 17th-century mansion. Small admission for some exhibits; public spaces free.

Museo de la Filatelia (MUFI)

Reforma 504, Centro

The stamp museum -- free entry, genuinely interesting, and the perfect 45-minute rain shelter.

IAGO

Macedonio Alcala 507, Centro

The Graphic Arts Institute founded by Francisco Toledo: exhibition galleries, a 60,000-volume art library and a bookshop of hard-to-find publications.

MACO

Macedonio Alcala 202, Centro

The contemporary art museum, reopened after a two-year closure -- check what's on before going, programming varies.

Workshops and tastings

The Casa de la Cultura Oaxaquena (Gonzalez Ortega 403) runs 146 artistic workshops for the October-December trimester -- many open to drop-ins. A mezcal tasting at Mezcaloteca (Reforma 506, book ahead) is the connoisseur's rainy afternoon, and a cooking class at Casa Crespo (Jacobo Dalevuelta 200) eats up three delicious hours. Details on our classes page.

With kids: the Museo Infantil in the old train station and the Poing Poing indoor playground are the rainy-day saves -- see our kids activities page.
