Oaxaca itineraries: 2 days, 3 days, and Dia de Muertos

Three days is the sweet spot -- but right now the calendar says Dia de Muertos, four weeks out. The essential routes plus the timing centerpiece, all verified October 2026.
Two days: the essentials
Day 1 -- the center. Start at the Zocalo, walk the Andador Turistico to Santo Domingo: the church atrium, the Museo de las Culturas (Tomb 7 gold), and a guided tour of the Jardin Etnobotanico behind it. Lunch in the 20 de Noviembre smoke aisle. Afternoon in Jalatlaco -- cobbled streets, San Matias church, golden hour. Evening: a mezcal tasting at Mezcaloteca (Reforma 506, book ahead), dinner at Los Danzantes or Casa Oaxaca.
Day 2 -- Monte Alban and the crafts villages. Monte Alban early (9 km west, 20 minutes out, three hours on site). Back to town for lunch, then the west loop: Arrazola for alebrijes (the Armando Jimenez workshop, Casa Tlacuache), San Bartolo Coyotepec for barro negro pottery. Evening cocktails at Sabina Sabe (5 de Mayo 209).
Three days: add the east loop
Day 3 -- Hierve el Agua and the Mitla road. The full-day eastern loop: the Tule tree (9 km out, quick stop), Teotitlan del Valle for weaving, Mitla's greca mosaics, then Hierve el Agua -- hike the 2.5 km loop trail first, swim in the mineral pools after. Book a tour or start very early; it's ~70 km each way on mountain roads. Full logistics on our day trips page.
Got a fourth day? Tlacolula's Sunday market (~30 km) if the day lines up, or Santiago Matatlan for the mezcal route with a guide. Or slow down: a cooking class at Casa Crespo and a temazcal (see our classes page and wellness page) fill a day beautifully.
The Dia de Muertos special: October 28 - November 2
The timing centerpiece -- the biggest week of the Oaxacan year, and it's four weeks out:
Wednesday October 28: the 5th Concurso Estatal de Dia de Muertos awards ceremony at the Real Alhondiga de Antequera (4 pm) -- the official opening of the season. Saturday October 31: comparsas (costumed death parades with brass bands) take the streets; the panteon vigils begin at Xoxocotlan's cemeteries and the Panteon de San Miguel in the city. Sunday November 1: ofrendas day -- homes, churches and plazas dressed in marigolds; second vigil night. Monday November 2: the closing vigils.
Practical: book accommodation NOW -- the city fills up. The panteones are working cemeteries, not venues: go quietly, buy marigolds from the vendors outside, expect controlled entry on the big nights. Comparsa routes are announced close to the date. Our city guide has the verified 2026 anchors.
Getting there and around
Flights to Oaxaca (OAX) land 20 minutes south of the Zocalo. The center is walked; taxis and colectivos cover the valley (agree the fare first). Monte Alban is the easy half-day; Hierve el Agua is the full-day commitment -- tour or very early start.
When to come: October-November is the sweet spot -- warm days, cool nights, festival season. June-September brings afternoon rain; December-February is crisp and clear, with Noche de Rabanos on December 23.
