Teen activities in Oaxaca

Oaxaca is sneakily great for teens: paint your own alebrije, swim in petrified-waterfall pools, climb real pyramids. The verified short list (October 2026).
The teen winners
Paint your own alebrije
The standout: family workshops in the alebrije village run paint-your-own sessions -- pick a carved wooden animal, spend two hours painting it, take home the souvenir. The Armando Jimenez workshop (Casa Tlacuache, Independencia 1) is the origin family. Book ahead; sessions run about four hours door to door.
Hierve el Agua
Petrified waterfalls, a 2.5 km loop trail with real climbing, and mineral infinity pools to swim in after. Guided tours take ages 13 and up -- this is the teen day trip.
Monte Alban
Climbable pyramids, a ball court, tombs and the whole valley below. Under-13s go free; teens get the scale of it. Go early, bring water.
Chocolate making
Oaxacan chocolate workshops (grind cacao with cinnamon and almonds, drink the result) run through several Centro kitchens -- ask at Casa Crespo or your hotel.
El Llano and the Zocalo
The big park for running around; the Zocalo for people-watching, marimba and (Wednesdays) danzon. Free, central, easy.
Rainy days and little siblings
The Museo Infantil in the old train station and the Poing Poing indoor playground are the rainy-day saves for younger teens and siblings -- details on our kids activities page. MUPO (Independencia 607) is the most teen-friendly museum: Oaxacan painters, manageable size.
Two honest notes: mezcal culture is 18+ and everywhere -- teens get the chocolate and the tejate instead, which is no hardship. And the chapuline dare (toasted grasshoppers in the 20 de Noviembre market) is a rite of passage; everyone remembers their first.
