Hiking & walking

Walking Fort Erie: two shores and the villages between

A river walk with a fort at one end, a lake walk with a point at the other.

Hiking and walking in Fort Erie: a river shore, a lake shore and village loops

Fort Erie walks in straight lines, the way the town is built: north along the Niagara River from the fort to the bridge, west along Lake Erie from beach to beach, and in loops around its villages' parks and hall grounds. There is no escarpment here and no trail-system brand to borrow -- the walking is shore walking, and the shore is the point.

The river walk's anchors: Old Fort Erie, 350 Lakeshore Road -- the town's defining historic site, seated in Fort Erie and operated by Niagara Parks, the provincial agency; both facts print together, always. The site carries the town's War of 1812 layer: the fort, its siege story and the annual Siege of Fort Erie reenactment weekend, whose 2026 edition ran Saturday August 8 and Sunday August 9, 2026 on Niagara Parks' own published page -- a past edition at this build, carried as canon, with the next edition announced on the operator's own surface and never derived here. In season the site also hosts History on Tap, with a dated evening on Saturday October 24, 2026, presented by Niagara Parks with Niagara College From the fort, the shore runs north past the river's working edge to Mather Arch Park and the Peace Bridge sector -- the town's founding walk, history at one end and the border at the other.

The walks, by shore

The lake shore, west

Crystal Beach to Waverly Beach and the west-shore stops

Bay Beach and the Crystal Beach waterfront, in the Crystal Beach community at the town's west end of the shore: the town's famous Lake Erie sand beach, in the Waterfront Park setting with The Grove at 4055 Erie Road nearby. One discipline governs every beach mention in this guide: Bay Beach is a PAID beach in season -- admission is charged and the price is not printed here because published figures vary by source, so the beach is never presented as a free attraction. Off season the shore is the town's walking and sunset ground West of the beach village, the shore quiets: Waverly Beach's ground, the Sherkston shore and the run toward Point Abino. In season, plan around the paid beach's frame; off season, the whole line walks open.

The village loops

Ridgeway, Stevensville and the park layer

the town's green and shore layer: Bay Beach and the Crystal Beach Waterfront Park on Lake Erie; Waverly Beach, the quieter shore east of the bridge sector; Mather Arch Park by the Peace Bridge; Ferndale Park, 865 Ferndale Avenue, home of the youth soccer clubhouse; Optimist Youth Park and Oakes Park; and the United Empire Loyalist Park in Stevensville. Inland, the hall-and-branch villages -- Ridgeway, Stevensville, Black Creek -- each hold their own green and gathering ground Ridgeway's loop ties the Ridge Road strip to the Crystal Ridge grounds; Stevensville's ties the Memorial Hall and library branch to the United Empire Loyalist Park; Ferndale Park's ground in the town's east ties the soccer clubhouse to the neighbourhood grid.

The fort grounds

Old Fort Erie -- the walked history layer

The fort's own grounds carry the 1812 story on foot -- the site, its shore and its Siege-weekend landscape (the 2026 Siege ran August 8-9, past). Outside event days, it is the town's most legible history walk, read with Niagara Parks' own interpretation, on the operator's surfaces.

Walking discipline for a border shore town

Two rules. First, the river's east shore ends at a border: the Peace Bridge sector is a crossing, not a crossing-point for walkers to improvise around -- admire the arch, read the plaques, and cross only as the authority directs, with identification. Second, shore access in the colony stretches (Point Abino above all) mixes public shore with private lanes: walk the public ground, respect the lanes, and let the boating clubs' shore be theirs. Distances on this page are deliberately unprinted -- the town's walks are described by their anchors, and a walker plans by the map, not by a borrowed figure.

Common questions

Where are the best walks in Fort Erie?

The Niagara River shore from Old Fort Erie north to Mather Arch Park and the Peace Bridge sector; the Lake Erie shore west from Crystal Beach through Waverly Beach toward Point Abino; and the village loops in Ridgeway and Stevensville around their parks and halls.

Can you walk across the Peace Bridge from Fort Erie?

The Peace Bridge is an international border crossing operated by the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority; any crossing follows the authority's and the border agencies' published directions, with identification. This guide prints the arch and the shore as the walk -- the crossing itself is a trip, planned from the authority's own site.
