Fort Erie's things to do sort into four honest piles: the heritage fort and the river, the lake shore at Crystal Beach, the race track and the arenas that carry the town's sporting life, and the library-and-halls layer residents actually live on. Each pile below names real places with real addresses, says who runs them, and flags the traps — the closed cinema, the paid beach, the defunct festival — before you drive to them.
Photos for Fort Erie are still on their way. Every listing below is real.
Start here: the fort, the track, the lake
Three places explain Fort Erie faster than any introduction.
Old Fort Erie
350 Lakeshore Rd, Fort Erie · Niagara Parks · heritage site · seasonal hours
Tour the War of 1812 fort with costumed interpreters — musket and cannon demonstrations, the soldiers' barracks, the siege story told where it happened. Niagara Parks operates the site; its calendar carries the Siege reenactment weekend each August and evenings like History on Tap (Saturday, October 24, 2026, 7–10 p.m., 19+). Start at Niagara Parks' fort page for hours and admission before going.
Fort Erie Race Track
230 Catherine St, Fort Erie · Thoroughbred racing · season ends Oct 20, 2026
A race day at one of Canada's oldest thoroughbred tracks, minutes from the Peace Bridge. The 129th season runs May 31 to October 20, 2026; the Prince of Wales Stakes ran September 7. Read race days from the track's own schedule — no date is inferred here — and note that published purse figures conflict, so none is quoted.
Bay Beach and Crystal Beach Waterfront Park
Erie Rd, Crystal Beach · Paid in season · Crystal Beach · market ends Oct 11
The town's swimming shore: a long sand beach, the waterfront park, and the Crystal Beach main street behind it. The honest print: Bay Beach charges admission in season under Town pass rules and is never listed here as free, and no price is quoted because published figures vary. The Sunday market at The Grove, 4055 Erie Rd, ends its 2026 season on Sunday, October 11 (ending 2 p.m.).
Safari Niagara
2821 Stevensville Rd, Stevensville · Zoo · Stevensville · 2026 season ends Oct 11
The town's zoo and nature park, in Stevensville: animal habitats, splash pad and ropes course across a big rural site. Its published 2026 season runs May 9 to October 11 — after that Sunday it is closed until spring, so check safariniagara.com before planning around it.
Sport and ice: how the town spends its winters
Fort Erie's winter runs on two rinks. The Leisureplex, 3 Municipal Centre Dr, holds twin pads — the Kinsmen pad is home ice for the Fort Erie Meteors, the town's junior B club, and the building hosts Greater Fort Erie Minor Hockey. Meteors home dates come from the league schedule; this guide prints the pattern (a real club, a real season underway) and no invented fixture list. The Crystal Ridge Arena in Ridgeway carries the west end. Public skating runs on the Town's published drop-in schedules — matinee and evening skates are priced in the Town's own fees schedule, and the current times live on the Town's surfaces, not in a copied table here.
On the water, the lake layer is boating as much as beaches: the Bertie Boating Club and the Buffalo Canoe Club — Buffalo by name, but seated at Point Abino in Fort Erie, so its sailing layer is this town's — anchor a summer of regattas and club racing at the town's west end. Note the discipline in action: a Buffalo name does not make it Buffalo content, just as a Buffalo address across the bridge never makes Buffalo content Fort Erie's.
The library and hall layer (the resident's town)
Ask a resident what there is to do on a wet Tuesday and the answer is the Fort Erie Public Library: three branches — Centennial, 136 Gilmore Rd; Crystal Ridge, 89 Ridge Rd S, Ridgeway; Stevensville, 2508 Stevensville Rd — with free programmes, the town's own ticketing for special events, and fixtures like the Halloween Bash on Thursday, October 29, 2026 (6–7 p.m., Centennial). The full listings live at fepl.ca, and they are the single best week-to-week answer this town publishes.
Around it sits a hall for nearly every community: the Leisureplex Banquet Hall, Crystal Ridge Community Centre, Stevensville Memorial Hall, the Gilmore Community Hub at 60 King St, Black Creek Community Centre, the two seniors' centres (the Lions centre at 265 High St and Beachcombers at 237 Ridge Rd N in Crystal Beach), the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre at 796 Buffalo Rd, and two Legion halls — Branch 71, 130 Garrison Rd, and Branch 230 in Ridgeway, printed by number and community only because its published street addresses conflict. Arts life concentrates in Ridgeway: the Fort Erie Arts Council's hub at 246 Ridge Rd N and The Sanctuary concert room at 209 Ridge Rd N. For animals in town, the Fort Erie SPCA at 410 Jarvis St is the in-town shelter with adoptions and a spay/neuter clinic — while the municipal animal-control mandate itself is held by the Humane Society of Greater Niagara, seated in St. Catharines; the Town's own web page and its by-law do not yet agree on that point, and both facts are printed here rather than a tidy half-truth.
Film, markets and the seasonal round
Film: there is no cinema to list — the Ridge Cinema Lounge in Ridgeway is permanently closed. The living film layer is the Fort Erie Film Circuit's TIFF Circuit series at the Meridian Centre for the Arts (GFESS, 1640 Garrison Rd), running September 28 to November 30, 2026, with a free RSVP night on Thursday, November 12. Markets: the Ridgeway Farmers' Market (Saturdays, Village Square, 282 Ridge Rd N) and the Crystal Beach Sunday Market (The Grove, 4055 Erie Rd) both end their 2026 seasons on the October 10–11 weekend — after that, the market season is over until spring, and a Stevensville market that directories list has no operator surface behind it, so it is not counted.
The year's round, for planning: racing from late May to mid-October; Ridgefest in Ridgeway each July (the 2026 edition ran July 10–12); the Siege at the fort each August (2026: August 8–9, past); beaches and Safari Niagara May to Thanksgiving; Halloween at the library and in Crystal Beach at the end of October; and Christmas craft shows on the Town calendar as December approaches — their 2026 dates were not yet published at this guide's build, so none is printed. The Friendship Festival belongs on none of these lists: it ended in 2019.
What Fort Erie does not have (so you don't drive for it)
No curling club is seated in town — winter ice here is hockey and skating, and the nearest curling club belongs to Niagara Falls. No enclosed mall — shopping is plazas along Garrison Road. No campus — the nearest colleges and the university are Welland, Niagara-on-the-Lake and St. Catharines. No airport for travellers — the gateway across the Peace Bridge is Buffalo's. No agricultural fair of its own — the nearest fall fairs are Wainfleet's and West Niagara's, and they are those towns' pages. And no free beach at Bay Beach in season. A guide that prints the negatives is one you can trust with the positives.
