New to Grimsby

New to Grimsby? Start with the geography: a town of 28,883 between Lake Ontario and the Escarpment, in Niagara Region, at the eastern end of the Hamilton census metropolitan area — close enough to commute, separate enough to have its own council, library and hockey club. This page separates what is actually seated in town from what serves Grimsby from a neighbouring city, because for a newcomer that distinction is the difference between a short walk and a half-hour drive.

Photos for Grimsby are still on their way. Every listing below is real.

First stops, all in town

Town Hall, 160 Livingston Avenue (905-945-9634 on the Town's own surfaces) runs municipal services; council is Mayor Jeff A. Jordan and eight councillors across four wards, working through five standing committees, with agendas published on the Town's eScribe portal. The Grimsby Public Library, 18 Carnegie Lane (905-945-5142), sharing its building with the Public Art Gallery, is the fastest way into town life — a library card, the programme grid on calendar.grimsby.ca, and the Author Series nights. The Major Refrigeration Peach King Centre, 162 Livingston Avenue, is where recreation registration, the arenas, the fitness centre and the splash pad live; the Town registers through its own recreation system. The Town's community calendar (calendar.grimsby.ca) is the one listings spine — Town and community organisations, with a public submit-an-event intake and a weekly digest.

Health care's local anchor is the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, 169 Main Street East — in Grimsby , whatever the name suggests; its new building opened November 24, 2025 as a Hamilton Health Sciences site. Animal services run the other way: Grimsby has no shelter of its own — the Humane Society of Greater Niagara holds the animal-control mandate for the town from its shelter in St. Catharines (24/7 pickup line 905-682-0767 on the society's own Grimsby page).

Settlement services: regional, named as regional

No settlement agency is seated in Grimsby, and this page will not pretend otherwise. YMCA of Niagara Employment & Immigrant Services and the SWIS (Settlement Workers in Schools) programme serve Niagara from out-of-town seats; DSBN Adult ESL publishes its class seats as Niagara Falls (year-round) and St. Catharines (summer). Those are the real doors — they are just not in Grimsby, and any directory that seats them here is wrong.

What is seated here and serves newcomers in practice: Community Living Grimsby, Lincoln & West Lincoln, whose administration and employment services sit at 191 South Service Road in Grimsby, and GBF Community Services, 40 Elm Street — the Grimsby Benevolent Fund's food bank and client services, the town's front door for food support and a major volunteer employer. The Town's own list of places of worship names 16 entries — Anglican, Catholic, Presbyterian, United, Lutheran, Reformed, Ukrainian Orthodox and other congregations, mostly along Main Street and Livingston Avenue. Two of the Town-list addresses conflict with directory records (the Kingdom Hall and the Church of Christ are each also published at a competing address), so confirm with the congregation before a first visit. No mosque, synagogue, gurdwara or Hindu temple seated in Grimsby was verified in our records — a documented gap, stated rather than papered over with regional listings.

Getting in, out and around

Rail and bus, at their true strengths. VIA Rail's Maple Leaf stops at Grimsby station, 99 Ontario Street — Toronto–New York, one long-distance train each way, an unstaffed accessible shelter with free parking. GO buses use the Casablanca Boulevard park-and-ride on the QEW corridor — bus service today, not a station. The Grimsby GO rail station is under construction (site preparation began June 22, 2026); Niagara reporting expects train service in summer 2027 — plan on the bus and the car until trains actually call.

By air, the town's own Grimsby Air Park (CNZ8) is a private general-aviation field — no scheduled flights. The working gateways, both other cities' airports named as gateways only: Hamilton International (YHM) is the nearest — about 28.7 km straight-line, with road figures in the roughly 40–45 km class depending on routing; and Toronto Pearson (YYZ), the full-service long-haul hub — about 53.3 km straight-line, roughly 75–85 km by road. Those road figures are labelled classes from routing-grade sources, not promises — and this guide builds no airport page of its own off the back of them.

Schools and first registrations

Children register with the two boards whose schools sit in town (both boards are headquartered in St. Catharines): the District School Board of Niagara (Central, Grand Avenue, Lakeview, Nelles, Park and Smith elementary schools) and Niagara Catholic (Our Lady of Fatima and St. Joseph elementary schools, and Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School — the town's only in-town secondary school; the public secondary school closed in 2022 and its students attend West Niagara Secondary in Beamsville). Full addresses are on the families page, along with the camps and youth-sport registrations (soccer, baseball, minor hockey) that fill a Grimsby family's first year.
