Indoor activities

Indoor Petawawa: one campus, two museums, a complete wet-day plan

The indoor plan here is compact and complete: the Civic Centre campus (arena, hall, library) for the body and the calendar, and the town's two museum poles for the mind. For a rain day or a February cold snap, that is a full programme.

The indoor plan, complete

the Petawawa Civic Centre, 16 Civic Centre Road, is the town's indoor hub: the Town's own facilities page gives an arena with an 83.5-by-183.5-foot ice surface and spectator seating for 554, a 6,000-square-foot banquet hall seating 272, a fundraising lounge for 20, and a Rotary Room booked through the Petawawa Public Library, which shares the Civic Centre campus. Outside are ball diamonds, soccer fields and a mini-putt course the Town packages in summer (June to September on its party-package page); the arena floor carries floor hockey, vendor events, concerts and receptions from April to September, when the ice is out. Recreation office hours and every programme grid live with the Town.

Petawawa Heritage Village, 176 Civic Centre Road, is the town's pioneer village, run by the Petawawa Heritage Society. In its own words it celebrates the settlement era and the immigrant stories of early Canada: its archives and collections focus on the German founding families and reach back thousands of years to the traditions and teachings of the First Nations people. The grounds hold restored and replica settlement-era buildings -- a blacksmith shop, a schoolhouse and a train station among them on visitor surfaces -- with historical tours and artisan markets among its published forms. Place records give a Tuesday-to-Saturday daytime season; the day's hours, tour times and admission live on petawawaheritagevillage.com, never frozen here, because the surfaces reached disagree on the exact grid and the operator's own page governs. the Garrison Petawawa Military Museums -- the Garrison Petawawa Museum and the Canadian Airborne Forces Museum, at 63 Colborne Road, on the garrison -- are the public-facing museum layer of Garrison Petawawa, attributed to the garrison and the Department of National Defence, never to the Town. The museums hold uniforms, medals, patches, photographs and vehicles and tell the story of the units that have trained and served from Petawawa, of Canadian parachuting, and of the Canadian Guards, the one regiment that called Petawawa its home station (1953-1970). Surfaces reached give museum hours of 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. across the week, with the Petawawa Post advising visitors to call ahead on holidays (613-588-6238), and admission by donation on the accounts reached. A restored Second World War Dakota aircraft, repainted with D-Day invasion stripes, was unveiled at the museum in June 2025. Visiting rules for a working garrison -- identification, access points, photography -- live with the garrison, and this guide prints none of them as promises.

The forms of the outing

The campus

Civic Centre arena, hall and library

Its hours and programme calendar live on petawawapubliclibrary.ca.

The pioneer interior

Heritage Village, in its season

the Heritage Village in brief: pioneer village at 176 Civic Centre Road, run by the Heritage Society -- settlement-era buildings, German founding-family archives and First Nations teachings, tours and artisan markets; hours and admission with the operator.

The garrison interior

Military museums, 11 to 4

the garrison museums in brief: Garrison Petawawa Museum and Canadian Airborne Forces Museum, 63 Colborne Road, on the garrison (DND) -- hours 11-4 on surfaces reached, admission by donation, call ahead on holidays. The museums are the all-season indoor anchor: check the garrison's visiting rules for the day before setting out.

What the indoor plan is not

Indoor Petawawa is a fallback plan, not the product: this town is visited outdoors first -- rivers, forest, park. The interiors are therefore ranged honestly: complete for a closed day (skate, hall event, library, two museums), exact about their grids (all with their operators), and never inflated into a destination the town does not claim. No indoor pool, cinema or climbing gym is documented in town on the surfaces reached, and none is asserted.

The garrison caveat, indoors too

The military museums sit inside a working garrison: access points, identification and photography rules are the garrison's, change with its posture, and are read with it for the day. This guide prints the museums' published public hours and by-donation admission, and no access promise beyond them.

Common questions

What is there to do in Petawawa when it rains?

The Civic Centre (public skating and hall events on the Town's grids), the Public Library's programmes, the Heritage Village in season, and the Garrison Petawawa Military Museums (11 to 4 on surfaces reached, by donation). That is the documented wet-day set.

Is there an indoor pool in Petawawa?

None is documented on the town surfaces reached, and this guide asserts none. Swimming here is river and beach swimming in season, at the town's shores.

Are the museums open in winter?

The garrison museums' surfaces give 11-to-4 hours across the week without a winter closure, with a call-ahead note for holidays. The Heritage Village is a seasonal operation; its winter posture is read with the operator.
